FIFA has found itself at the centre of controversy after confirming that an all-Argentine officiating team will oversee France’s World Cup quarter-final against Morocco.
The appointment has prompted widespread debate, with supporters questioning the decision given the recent sporting rivalry between Argentina and France, as well as the possibility that both nations could still be competing for the tournament title.
FIFA announced that experienced referee Facundo Tello will take charge of the quarter-final at Boston Stadium.
The 44-year-old will be assisted by fellow Argentines Juan Pablo Belatti and Gabriel Chade, while Dario Herrera has been appointed fourth official. Cristian Navarro will serve as the reserve assistant referee.
It marks the first match at the 2026 World Cup to feature an officiating team made up entirely of officials from the same country.
Although FIFA selects referees based on performance and experience rather than nationality, the decision has generated considerable discussion because Argentina remain among the favourites to win the competition.
Despite the growing debate, the French squad has insisted it has no concerns over the appointment and remains focused solely on the challenge posed by Morocco.
Defender Dayot Upamecano dismissed suggestions that the officiating team could become a distraction.
“I’m not going to focus on who the referee will be. We’ve never done that before. We’re going to focus on Morocco.”
Third-choice goalkeeper Robin Risser also urged calm, insisting FIFA would only appoint officials capable of handling a match of such importance.
“There’s been a certain bitterness for a few years now since the last final, but that’s part of football.
“If these referees are there, it’s because they’re good enough for this level of competition.”
While France’s players have chosen not to dwell on the issue, supporters have been far more vocal online.
Many questioned why FIFA opted for officials from a single nation in such a high-profile knockout fixture.
Among the reactions on social media were comments including:
The appointment has become one of the biggest talking points ahead of the quarter-final, even before a ball has been kicked.
With a place in the World Cup semi-finals at stake, the spotlight will inevitably fall on every major decision made during the match.
FIFA, however, continues to maintain that referee appointments are made on merit, with officials selected based on their performances throughout the tournament rather than nationality.
Whether the debate fades after kick-off may ultimately depend on whether the officiating team delivers an error-free performance in one of the tournament’s biggest fixtures.
