‘It’s the last dance’ – Cristiano Ronaldo’s sister claims Portugal captain will retire from international duty after World Cup

Cristiano Ronaldo is reportedly preparing to bring the curtain down on one of football’s greatest international careers after the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Portugal captain’s sister, Katia Aveiro, has revealed that the tournament will be the 41-year-old’s “last dance” with the national team, suggesting he has no plans to continue through to Euro 2028.

Ronaldo set for emotional Portugal farewell

Ronaldo has continued to rewrite football history during the tournament, recently becoming the first 41-year-old to feature in a World Cup knockout match.

He also scored his first-ever World Cup knockout-stage goal from the penalty spot as Portugal secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over Croatia to reach the quarter-finals.

However, according to his sister, this World Cup will mark the final chapter of his remarkable international journey.

Sister reveals retirement plans

Speaking to Sport TV after arriving in Toronto to support Portugal, Katia Aveiro said she believes Ronaldo has already decided to retire from international football once the tournament ends.

She also praised the veteran forward’s calm mentality despite the pressure surrounding Portugal’s World Cup campaign.

“The most important thing is to enjoy these 20-plus years we’ve experienced. I feel an incredible amount of pride. I was in Qatar, and I am here now. It’s a tremendous source of pride,” she said.

“Ronaldo is confident, less nervous than us. I felt a good energy and confidence. For us, the fans, it brings comfort.”

When asked whether Ronaldo could still represent Portugal at Euro 2028, her response appeared decisive.

“From the information I have, you can say your goodbyes. Not today just yet, but I believe this is the farewell. I’m talking about the national team. From a reliable source, the World Cup is the ‘last dance’.”

Family rallies behind Portugal legend

Ronaldo has once again found himself under intense scrutiny during the tournament, with critics questioning both his performances and his longevity at the highest level.

His sister dismissed those criticisms, insisting that his achievements over more than two decades speak for themselves.

“For intelligent people, anyone who loves football has to love Ronaldo. They are the ones missing out,” Katia added.

“He’s been breaking boundaries for 20-odd years. Look at where the Aveiro family is now and where we came from. The suffering my mother went through… do you think criticism is going to interfere with our happiness? Never!”

If Katia’s comments prove accurate, Portugal’s remaining matches at the 2026 World Cup will also serve as the final appearances of one of international football’s most decorated and influential players.
