MLS star Stephen Eustáquio sends Canada into first-ever World Cup last 16 with stunning stoppage-time winner against South Africa

Canada booked their place in the World Cup round of 16 for the first time in history after Stephen Eustàquio produced a moment of brilliance to sink South Africa with a dramatic stoppage-time winner.

With extra time looming at Los Angeles Stadium, the LAFC midfielder unleashed a superb first-time volley from the edge of the penalty area to seal a 1-0 victory and send the tournament co-hosts into the knockout stages in unforgettable fashion.

Eustàquio produces historic moment

For more than 90 minutes, Canada struggled to turn territorial dominance into goals, but their captain stepped up when it mattered most.

The loose ball fell invitingly to Eustàquio just outside the box in the second minute of stoppage time, and the midfielder struck a fierce right-footed volley into the bottom corner, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance.

The final whistle moments later sparked wild celebrations as Jesse Marsch sprinted onto the pitch to embrace his players after Canada’s biggest result on the international stage.

South Africa fail to threaten

Bafana Bafana approached the contest cautiously and ultimately paid the price for their lack of attacking intent.

Despite enjoying 58 per cent possession, Hugo Broos’ side rarely troubled Maxime Crépeau, generating just 0.13 expected goals across the entire match.

Their patient build-up play offered plenty of control but little penetration, allowing Canada’s defence to remain comfortable throughout before the decisive late blow.

Marsch’s changes transform the game

Marsch’s attacking substitutions proved decisive.

The introduction of Alphonso Davies after 75 minutes immediately increased Canada’s tempo, with the Bayern Munich star stretching South Africa’s compact defensive shape and creating greater urgency down the left flank.

Rather than settling for extra time, Canada continued to push forward in the closing stages. Although they squandered several promising opportunities earlier in the contest, their relentless pressure finally overwhelmed South Africa’s resistance.

Marsch’s refusal to accept penalties ultimately paid off as Eustàquio delivered a goal that secured Canada’s place in the World Cup knockout rounds for the very first time.
