MLS All-Star Mbekezeli Mbokazi Backed for Greatness After Earning More Votes Than Lionel Messi

Mbokazi Making Headlines in MLS

South African defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi continues to attract global attention after an outstanding debut campaign with Chicago Fire that saw him earn a place in the MLS All-Star squad — and even receive more fan votes than Inter Miami superstar Lionel Messi.

The 20-year-old has enjoyed a remarkable rise since leaving Orlando Pirates for the United States in late 2025, quickly establishing himself as one of the league’s most exciting young defenders.

Currently representing South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Mbokazi’s performances have earned widespread praise from former Bafana Bafana star Doctor Khumalo, who believes the youngster could become one of the world’s elite players.

First South African MLS All-Star in Three Decades

Mbokazi became the first South African player in 30 years to be selected for the MLS All-Star roster, a milestone that highlights just how impressive his first season in America has been.

Khumalo described the achievement as exceptional, particularly given the growing quality and global profile of Major League Soccer.

“The MLS has become a major football brand and attracts some of the biggest names in the game,” Khumalo told GOAL. “To be selected as an All-Star in your first season at such a young age is an incredible achievement.”

The former midfielder admitted Mbokazi had exceeded expectations since arriving in the United States.

“He has actually surpassed what many people expected. His discipline, attitude and football education from Orlando Pirates have clearly helped him settle quickly.”

Ambassador for South African Football

Khumalo believes Mbokazi’s success is opening doors for future generations of South African talent.

The defender is one of several South Africans currently playing in MLS, alongside Chicago Fire teammate Puso Dithejane, Minnesota United forward Bongokuhle Hlongwane and Philadelphia Union defender Olwethu Makhanya.

However, Mbokazi’s impact has been particularly significant.

“He’s become an ambassador for South African football,” Khumalo explained. “When a young player succeeds abroad, it creates opportunities for others to follow.”

His rapid rise has also brought him into competition with some of the biggest stars in world football, including Messi and several other international icons currently playing in North America.

Fearless Mentality Driving Success

According to Khumalo, one of Mbokazi’s greatest strengths is his competitive mindset.

The former Orlando Pirates academy graduate has built a reputation for aggressive defending, physical dominance and an unwavering desire to win every battle on the pitch.

“He doesn’t care who he’s playing against,” Khumalo said. “Whether it’s Messi or any other star, he approaches every match the same way.”

“He loves competition and hates losing. You can see it in his tackles, his duels and the way he approaches every game.”

Khumalo also highlighted the defender’s physical attributes, describing him as unusually complete for a player of his age.

Future Star in the Making

While Mbokazi is still in the early stages of his career, Khumalo believes the foundation is already in place for him to reach the highest level.

The South African legend believes continued development in MLS and exposure to elite-level competition will accelerate his growth.

“Physically, he already has everything needed to compete at the top level,” Khumalo added. “Now it’s about gaining experience and continuing to develop.”

“If he keeps progressing the way he has so far, I genuinely believe he can become one of the greatest players in the world.”

With his reputation growing on both sides of the Atlantic, Mbokazi’s journey is only just beginning — and South African football will be watching closely.
