Carlos Queiroz Explains Heated Jude Bellingham Confrontation During England’s World Cup Draw With Ghana

Ghana head coach Carlos Queiroz has shed light on his touchline confrontation with Jude Bellingham during England’s tense 0-0 draw against the Black Stars at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The incident occurred just before half-time after Bellingham committed a challenge on Ghana defender Jerome Opoku near the technical area. Emotions quickly escalated, with the England midfielder exchanging words with Queiroz before players and staff stepped in to separate the pair.

Queiroz Reveals What Triggered The Exchange

Speaking after the match, Queiroz insisted his reaction was motivated by concern over the nature of the tackle rather than any personal issue with the Real Madrid star.

“He had a bad reaction with some bad names, that’s why the story started,” Queiroz explained.

“My intention was to tell him to calm down after that challenge. It could easily have been a second yellow card or even a red card because of the way he went in against my player.”

While the Ghana boss stopped short of revealing exactly what was said, he admitted emotions briefly boiled over.

“It was nothing special. It was an emotional moment. One word can create a little bit of fire, but immediately, as professionals, we moved on.”

“Football Is For Brave People”

The experienced coach, managing at his fifth World Cup, downplayed the incident while emphasizing the competitive nature of tournament football.

“Football is for brave people, not for people dancing in tuxedos,” Queiroz added.

His comments reflected the intensity of a fiercely contested match in which Ghana frustrated England’s attack and secured a valuable point that strengthened their hopes of reaching the knockout rounds.

Tuchel Defends England Star

England manager Thomas Tuchel was quick to defend Bellingham after the final whistle and rejected suggestions that Ghana had managed to unsettle his team.

“No one got under our skin,” Tuchel said.

“It was an exchange of emotions. Jude stood up for himself and for us as a team. There is no problem with that.”

The England boss also stressed that the incident had no impact on the dressing-room atmosphere during the interval.

“We were very calm at half-time. We know emotions are part of football, but we didn’t want to get distracted by things that don’t help us. That was clear.”

Focus Turns To Final Group Matches

Despite dominating possession, England were unable to break down Ghana’s disciplined defensive setup as the match ended goalless in Boston.

The result leaves England still in a strong position to qualify for the knockout stages, while Ghana remain firmly in contention after earning a hard-fought point against one of the tournament favourites.

Both teams now turn their attention to their final Group L fixtures, with qualification for the last 32 still on the line.
