Harry Kane has revealed the inspiring half-time message delivered by Thomas Tuchel that helped transform England’s performance during their thrilling 4-2 victory over Croatia in their opening match of the 2026 World Cup.
After a nervy and inconsistent first-half display, the Three Lions emerged after the interval with renewed confidence and intensity, overwhelming Croatia to secure a statement victory in Dallas.
England twice led during an entertaining opening 45 minutes but were repeatedly pegged back by a resilient Croatian side.
Kane had already etched his name further into World Cup history by converting a penalty and then heading home from a Declan Rice corner, drawing level with Gary Lineker as England’s all-time leading scorer at World Cups.
However, Croatia responded on both occasions, leaving the match finely balanced at 2-2 heading into half-time.
The second half told a different story.
Jude Bellingham restored England’s lead shortly after the restart before substitute Marcus Rashford wrapped up the victory late on as Tuchel’s side took complete control.
Following the match, Kane credited Tuchel’s half-time intervention for sparking England’s dramatic improvement.
The England captain revealed that the German coach encouraged his players to play without fear and embrace the occasion rather than feeling burdened by expectations.
“He told us to take the shackles off, calm down and let’s go,” Kane explained.
“He said what’s the worst that can happen? Show the world who we can be.
“We came out in the second half full gas and they couldn’t live with it, and that’s the level we have to set in every game.
“The way we controlled the game once we went ahead, we never really looked like we were in danger and then scored on the counterattack.
“We had a spell where we could have scored three or four. Credit to everyone: the first game of the tournament and a great result against a tough side.”
While Kane highlighted Tuchel’s motivational message, Jude Bellingham insisted there was no explosive confrontation behind closed doors.
Instead, the Real Madrid midfielder described a calm and measured conversation from a manager who understood exactly what his team needed.
“It wasn’t one of those where it was a big drama or standing up and shouting,” Bellingham said.
“It was what the team needed.
“We have a mature group with great leaders in there; everyone knew the level we had to get to.
“The start of the second half gave us a great platform.”
The victory represented a promising start to Tuchel’s first major tournament as England manager.
While defensive questions remain after conceding twice, England’s attacking display showcased the quality available throughout the squad.
Kane continued his remarkable scoring record, Bellingham once again delivered on the biggest stage, and Rashford made an immediate impact from the bench as England laid down an early marker in the race for World Cup glory.
If Tuchel’s half-time message is any indication, the Three Lions are determined to play with freedom, confidence and ambition throughout the tournament.
