‘Do as I told you!’ – Thomas Tuchel’s furious touchline rant at Jordan Pickford revealed during England’s World Cup win over Croatia

Thomas Tuchel’s first World Cup match in charge of England ended in victory, but the German coach was far from satisfied with everything he saw during the Three Lions’ 4-2 win over Croatia.

The former Chelsea boss was caught in a heated exchange with goalkeeper Jordan Pickford during the first half, with pitchside microphones revealing his frustration as England attempted to implement a new tactical approach under his leadership.

Tuchel loses patience with Pickford

England had already taken the lead in Dallas when Tuchel’s anger boiled over on the touchline.

According to reports from pitchside reporter Geoff Shreeves, the incident occurred after Pickford ignored a specific instruction regarding England’s build-up play. Rather than distributing the ball to the right flank as requested, the Everton goalkeeper chose a different option, prompting an immediate reaction from his manager.

Tuchel quickly left his technical area and made his displeasure known to England’s No.1.

‘Do as I told you!’

The exchange highlighted the demanding standards Tuchel is trying to establish within the England setup.

Shreeves explained the confrontation during the live broadcast.

“Jordan Pickford was on his left side and off balance and still picked up. Thomas Tuchel was straight out to the touchline and said, ‘No, put it out to the right-back, you don’t go that side’.”

Pickford reportedly attempted to defend his decision, but Tuchel was having none of it.

According to Shreeves, the England manager responded firmly: “You know what you’re supposed to do, do as I told you!”

The moment offered an early glimpse into Tuchel’s intense coaching style and his determination to ensure every player follows the tactical plan.

England struggled despite early lead

While England eventually ran out comfortable winners, the opening stages were far from convincing.

Croatia twice fought back after falling behind, exposing defensive vulnerabilities and forcing Tuchel into an animated response from the sidelines.

Assistant coach Anthony Barry later admitted the team displayed “fearful patterns” during the first half and struggled to decide when to play short or long from the back.

Those issues contributed to a chaotic opening 45 minutes that ended with the score level at 2-2.

Kane reveals Tuchel’s winning message

Whatever was said inside the dressing room at half-time worked perfectly.

England returned for the second half with far greater intensity and control, eventually pulling away thanks to goals from Jude Bellingham and Marcus Rashford.

Captain Harry Kane later revealed the key message delivered by Tuchel during the interval.

“He told us to take the shackles off, calm down and let’s go,” Kane explained.

“He said what’s the worst that can happen? Show the world who we can be.

“We came out in the second half full gas and they couldn’t live with it, and that’s the level we have to set in every game.”

Early signs of the Tuchel era

The touchline confrontation with Pickford may grab the headlines, but it also underlined Tuchel’s meticulous attention to detail.

England’s second-half response suggested the players are already buying into his methods, even if there are still aspects of their game that require refinement.

With Ghana next up in Group L, Tuchel will be hoping his side can produce a more complete performance from the first whistle while maintaining the attacking ruthlessness that eventually overwhelmed Croatia.
