Harry Kane backed to reach 100 England goals as Darren Anderton says Three Lions captain still has ‘a few years left’

Harry Kane backed to reach 100 England goals as Darren Anderton says Three Lions captain still has ‘a few years left’

Former England international Darren Anderton believes Harry Kane can continue rewriting the record books and potentially reach the remarkable milestone of 100 international goals.

The Bayern Munich striker already stands alone as England’s all-time leading scorer with 79 goals and remains a pivotal figure for the Three Lions heading into the latter stages of the 2026 World Cup.

Kane’s record-breaking England journey

Kane’s international career could hardly have started in more dramatic fashion.

The striker scored just 80 seconds after coming off the bench on his senior England debut against Lithuania in 2015, immediately announcing himself on the international stage.

Since then, the former Tottenham forward has gone on to shatter Wayne Rooney’s previous England record of 53 goals, establishing a benchmark that may take decades to surpass.

His international honours include winning the Golden Boot at the 2018 World Cup, while he has also produced multiple double-digit scoring years for England, including a personal-best tally of 16 goals in 2021.

With 79 goals already to his name, discussion has now shifted from whether Kane can extend the record to how far he can push it.

Anderton believes 100 goals is possible

Speaking exclusively to GOAL in association with Casino Kings, former Tottenham and England winger Darren Anderton insisted Kane has every chance of joining football’s elite group of international centurions.

“High! He still has a few years left if he wants them,” Anderton said when asked how far Kane could extend his record.

“The thing is, he’s never relied on being the fastest player in the world. I always said the same about Teddy Sheringham. He’s not slow, but pace has never been the biggest part of his game.

“As he loses a bit of speed, I don’t think it’ll affect him as much as it would other players. So who knows how far he can go?

“The concerning issue is that we haven’t really got anyone to replace him, so at the moment it looks like he can play for as long as he wants.”

If Kane reaches the century mark, he would join an exclusive group that includes football icons Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Evolution of a world-class striker

While Kane built his reputation as one of football’s deadliest penalty-box finishers, his game has evolved significantly over the years.

The England captain now frequently drops deeper into midfield, helping link play and create opportunities for teammates before arriving in dangerous areas.

Some critics have suggested that this approach reduces his goalscoring threat, but Anderton believes it actually highlights the striker’s complete skill set.

A dream striker for any winger

Anderton dismissed any suggestion that Kane’s movement makes him difficult to play alongside.

Instead, he compared the Bayern star to a blend of two legendary England forwards.

“There’s a bit of Teddy Sheringham and Alan Shearer in him. I think he can do it all,” Anderton explained.

“You know, when Teddy used to drop deep and link the play, the next ball might then come out wide to me, but he’d still get into the box. I think Harry does the same.

“Obviously, Teddy probably had another striker alongside him, so he had a bit more freedom to do that. But as a wide player, there’s no way you could have any problem playing with Harry Kane.

“He’s just had an incredible season. He can literally do everything. He’s absolutely world-class, and as a wide man, I’d love to play with him.”

England’s reliance on Kane continues

Anderton also suggested England’s tactical approach in recent tournaments may have limited Kane’s goalscoring opportunities.

Despite reaching major finals, he believes the team’s conservative style often forced their captain to drop deeper than ideal.

“I think the style of football we played in the last couple of tournaments, even though we reached finals, was pretty dour and rigid,” he said.

“That didn’t really suit Harry Kane in terms of goalscoring. He probably felt he had to drop deep and get involved because he’s our main man.”

With Kane still performing at an elite level for both club and country, England’s all-time scoring record appears likely to continue rising for several years yet — and the prospect of reaching 100 international goals no longer seems out of reach.
