Brendan Rodgers Reveals Emotional Cristiano Ronaldo ‘Connection’ After Viral Saudi Pro League Hug
Brendan Rodgers has opened up on the heartfelt story behind his emotional post-match embrace with Cristiano Ronaldo, revealing that their bond stretches back more than a decade and carries deep personal meaning.
The moment between the Al-Qadsiah manager and the Al-Nassr superstar during their Saudi Pro League clash quickly went viral — not because of the result, but because of the genuine warmth between the two football figures.
A Viral Moment Built On Respect
Following Al-Qadsiah’s impressive 3-1 victory over Al-Nassr, cameras captured Rodgers and Ronaldo sharing a long conversation and a warm hug on the pitch.
While fans initially speculated about the nature of the exchange, Rodgers later explained that the moment was rooted in history, respect, and a gesture from Ronaldo that he has never forgotten.
“Our connection goes back a long way,” Rodgers said.
A Personal Story From Old Trafford Days
Rodgers revealed that the bond dates back to his early coaching days at Chelsea, when a family moment created an unforgettable link with the Portuguese icon.
He recalled how his mother, a huge football fan, had expressed a strong desire to meet Ronaldo during his Manchester United days.
“My mother was at a Chelsea game against Manchester United and wanted to meet Cristiano Ronaldo, who was her favourite player at the time,” Rodgers explained.
Despite working for Chelsea, Rodgers said he approached Ronaldo after the match — and the forward immediately agreed to meet her.
“He did. He spent time with her, took a picture, and said very kind words to her. That has always stayed with me.”
Rodgers added that the memory became even more meaningful after his mother passed away in 2010.
“For me, it was a really special moment for my mother and obviously for me.”
Ronaldo’s Lasting Impact
Beyond the personal story, Rodgers also praised Ronaldo’s wider influence on football in Saudi Arabia and beyond.
The Al-Nassr captain has been credited with transforming the global perception of the Saudi Pro League, attracting world-class talent and increasing international attention on the competition.
“He has done incredible things in his career,” Rodgers said.
“He’s probably the reason why so many people from Europe and all over the world are here in Saudi Arabia.”
Even in defeat, Ronaldo’s presence continues to dominate headlines — a testament to his enduring global star power.
Respect That Transcends Rivalry
Despite being on opposite sides in a competitive league fixture, the interaction between Rodgers and Ronaldo showed a different side of football — one built on respect, gratitude, and shared history.
Moments like these remind fans that beyond trophies, rivalries, and scorelines, football is also about human connection.
And in this case, a simple act of kindness years ago created a bond that still exists today.
