Rory McIlroy during the opening round of the Truist Championship at Quail Hollow.
Rory McIlroy made a steady start to his latest challenge at the Truist Championship, opening with a one-under-par 70 at Quail Hollow.
The Northern Irish star is aiming to secure a fifth victory at one of his most successful venues, and while fireworks were limited in round one, McIlroy kept himself firmly in contention heading into the weekend.
McIlroy’s round was a story of patience and consistency.
The 37-year-old remarkably carded 17 pars before finally producing his only birdie of the day at the 18th hole to finish under par.
Although it was not his most explosive performance at Quail Hollow, the controlled round ensured he avoided costly mistakes on a course where he has historically dominated.
American golfer Matt McCarty stole the early headlines after firing a sensational eight-under 63 to take the first-round lead.
McCarty’s aggressive approach and sharp putting placed him at the top of the leaderboard after an impressive display in Charlotte.
England enjoyed a productive opening day with several players making strong starts.
Harry Hall finished five under after recording six birdies and just one bogey during an excellent round of 66.
Meanwhile:
Other British golfers experienced more challenging rounds.
Matt Wallace and Justin Rose both signed for level-par 71s, while Robert MacIntyre was sitting two over par with one hole remaining before play was suspended because of bad weather.
The Truist Championship serves as the final tournament before the upcoming PGA Championship.
This year’s major tournament will take place at Aronimink Golf Club in Pennsylvania from May 14-17, making this week an important preparation event for many of golf’s biggest stars.
For McIlroy, strong form at Quail Hollow could provide the perfect momentum heading into another major challenge.
Rory McIlroy may not have exploded out of the gates, but experienced golfers know tournaments are rarely won on Thursday.
And at a course where he has already built a legendary reputation, the four-time major champion remains firmly in the hunt.
