Gayton McKenzie: South Africa Ready To Host WAFCON 2026 If Morocco Falters
Gayton McKenzie has declared that South Africa is fully prepared to host the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) if Morocco is unable to stage the tournament as planned.
The Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture made the remarks during a media engagement on Wednesday, amid reports suggesting possible uncertainty around Morocco’s readiness.
Morocco — officially the host nation for the 2026 tournament — previously staged the competition and is scheduled to host again.
“South Africa Is Ready”
McKenzie publicly challenged the situation, questioning why there appears to be doubt surrounding the organisation of the tournament.
“If Morocco is not ready to host the WAFCON, they should tell us now because South Africa is ready. Why are we treating women’s football like this?”
Reports have indicated a potential postponement of the tournament from its proposed March 17 to April 3 window, though no official confirmation has been made.
McKenzie went further, suggesting the reported disruptions could be politically influenced.
“I believe this disruption in hosting the WAFCON is to try and ruin the great work Patrice Motsepe is doing at the Confederation of African Football.”
CAF & Motsepe Mentioned
Confederation of African Football (CAF), currently led by Patrice Motsepe, oversees the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
While CAF has not announced any changes to the hosting arrangement, McKenzie’s comments signal South Africa’s willingness to step in if necessary.
What’s At Stake?
The 2026 WAFCON is expected to feature 12 teams and will serve as a key qualification pathway for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
For South Africa — reigning continental champions — hosting the tournament would present both a sporting and symbolic opportunity to further elevate women’s football on the continent.
For now, Morocco remains the official host, but McKenzie has made it clear: if there is any doubt, South Africa stands ready.
