Stanley Nwabali Linked With Kaizer Chiefs After Chippa United Exit

Stanley Nwabali may be closing in on a new club just weeks after terminating his contract with Chippa United F.C..

The 29-year-old goalkeeper has been without a club since mutually parting ways with the South African side, a move that followed his impressive rise with the Nigeria national football team.

From AFCON Hero To Free Agent

Nwabali’s stock soared after standout performances at AFCON 2025, where he cemented his status as Nigeria’s undisputed No.1.

Despite reported interest from clubs in Africa and Europe, no firm offers materialised. Backing his market value, Nwabali chose to become a free agent in hopes of securing a high-profile move.

After weeks of uncertainty, a potential breakthrough has now emerged.

Kaizer Chiefs Leading The Race

According to fresh reports, Kaizer Chiefs F.C. have placed Nwabali at the top of their transfer shortlist.

The Amakhosi are said to have admired the Nigerian for some time but previously held back due to the presence of first-choice goalkeeper Brandon Petersen.

However, Petersen’s recent surgery — which is expected to sideline him for an extended period — has forced Chiefs to accelerate their search for an experienced replacement.

A Seamless PSL Return?

For Chiefs, Nwabali represents:

  • A cost-effective option as a free agent

  • Immediate eligibility for registration

  • Four years of Premier Soccer League experience

  • Proven leadership, having captained Chippa United

Following a 3-0 Soweto Derby defeat to Orlando Pirates F.C., Chiefs are reportedly eager to stabilise their season with a commanding presence in goal.

Europe Or PSL?

Some observers believe Nwabali has outgrown the PSL and should be targeting a top European league. However, with no concrete overseas offers currently on the table, a move to Kaizer Chiefs could provide the stability he needs.

Crucially, with World Cup qualifiers approaching, remaining clubless for too long could jeopardise his hold on Nigeria’s starting shirt.

For now, Chiefs appear to offer the most realistic and immediate solution — but whether Nwabali views it as a stepping stone or a long-term project remains to be seen.
