Julian Alvarez To Chelsea?! Blues Backed To Beat Arsenal & Barcelona In Sensational Transfer Race

Chelsea are being backed to win the transfer race for Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez. The World Cup-winning Argentina international left English football after severing ties with Manchester City in 2024, and speculation is mounting that Stamford Bridge could be his next destination.

Alvarez leaves Man City as a treble winner

According to ESPN, Chelsea are “advancing in talks” to bring Alvarez to west London. The Blues have invested heavily in attacking talent in recent transfer windows, including signings like Joao Pedro and Liam Delap in the summer of 2025.

Alvarez won two top-flight titles in England with Manchester City and was part of their treble-winning squad in 2023. During his City career, he scored 36 goals in 103 appearances, though regular starting opportunities were limited. His €95 million (£83m/$113m) transfer to Atletico Madrid demonstrates the level of investment required to secure his services.

Chelsea prepared to outbid rivals

Chelsea are reportedly willing to spend €100 million (£87m/$119m) to complete a deal for Alvarez. With funds expected to be available in the summer, the Blues are looking to secure Champions League qualification again, which would strengthen their financial position for the transfer.

The highly-rated Argentina international, who has scored 40 goals in 88 appearances for Atletico, has also attracted interest from Arsenal. While the Gunners remain contenders in the Premier League, Mikel Arteta has reportedly prioritised midfield reinforcements, leaving Chelsea with an advantage.

Transfer talks progressing

Discussions between Chelsea and Alvarez’s agents have reportedly taken place, with representatives attending a recent Chelsea fixture in England. Positive talks were said to have been held during those meetings.

ESPN journalist Jorge Baravalle reported: “People are talking a lot with Barcelona and Arsenal. But I’m being told that the team slowly moving forward is Chelsea. Chelsea, quietly, are advancing for Julian Alvarez. Part of the agency handling Julian’s transfer was in London this week, watching Chelsea v Arsenal. They know both clubs want him, but as of today, the most advanced contacts are with Chelsea.”

Atletico Madrid would be reluctant to sell to La Liga rivals Barcelona, who are facing financial difficulties, making Chelsea and Arsenal more viable options. Alvarez is under contract until 2023, giving Atletico no pressure to sell. The forward himself has said he is focused on the season with Atletico and is tuning out transfer speculation.

Alvarez on his future

When asked about the ongoing transfer rumours, Alvarez said: “Look, it doesn’t bother me. I try not to pay much attention, but I know what’s being said. It’s all over social media. I think it’s more what’s being said online than what’s actually happening. I’m very focused on this season, on what lies ahead with Atletico Madrid. So, I try to tune it out and think about myself, about continuing to grow as a player, and about winning.”
