‘Like Real Madrid In Asia’ – Karim Benzema Reveals Al-Hilal Trophy Ambition After Controversial Transfer
Karim Benzema has caused a stir in the Saudi Pro League after completing a sensational transfer from Al-Ittihad to rivals Al-Hilal, describing his new club as the “Real Madrid in Asia.” The move, which has already sparked controversy, reportedly angered Cristiano Ronaldo, who allegedly attempted to block the switch.
Benzema Compares Al-Hilal To Real Madrid
Speaking after his first training session under Jorge Jesus, the 38-year-old French striker wasted no time drawing parallels between Al-Hilal and his former club, Real Madrid, where he spent 14 years and won the 2022 Ballon d’Or.
“It’s good. I’m happy to be here,” Benzema said on the club’s official website.
“After my first training with the team, with the coach, I’m so happy and glad to be a part of this team. It’s a good team, with a good history. They have won a lot of trophies.”
He added:
“It’s similar, like Real Madrid in Asia. Everything is good, the fans are good, they play well, they have good players, they have a good mentality.”
Benzema also revealed a long-standing admiration for Al-Hilal, recalling past matches against them during his time in Europe:
“I liked this team from before. I used to play against them with Madrid and it was not an easy game. It was a good game so I have good memories. Today I’m happy because I’m a player of Al-Hilal.”
Contract ‘Disrespect’ Sparks Move
Benzema’s exit from Al-Ittihad came after a reported breakdown in contract negotiations. The striker allegedly felt “disrespected” by the terms offered for an extension, which would have seen him effectively play for free, according to ESPN.
Instead, he joined league leaders Al-Hilal, in a move orchestrated by the Public Investment Fund (PIF) to retain marquee players in the Saudi Pro League. The striker also benefits from a lucrative image rights deal that runs until 2030.
Ronaldo Furious Over Alleged Favouritism
Benzema’s arrival has reportedly infuriated Cristiano Ronaldo, captain of Al-Nassr, Al-Hilal’s closest rivals. Sources claim Ronaldo protested the deal by initially refusing to play, believing the transfer gave Al-Hilal an unfair advantage in the title race.
Al-Nassr currently sit just one point behind Al-Hilal, and the addition of a proven winner like Benzema has heightened competition in the league.
