Wayne Rooney Tips Hugo Ekitike To Become Liverpool’s Main Striker After Standout Display

Wayne Rooney has thrown his weight behind Hugo Ekitike, insisting the Liverpool forward has the quality, instinct, and intelligence to become the club’s main striker.

The former England captain made the bold claim after Ekitike delivered a statement performance in Liverpool’s win over Newcastle United, scoring twice and stepping up in the absence of the injured Alexander Isak.

Ekitike Seizes His Moment

With Isak sidelined, Ekitike was handed a rare opportunity to lead the line — and he took it with both hands. His brace not only secured the win but also reignited debate over Liverpool’s long-term striker hierarchy.

Rooney believes the Frenchman’s display should make Isak uneasy.

“I’d be more worried if I was Isak, sat there watching,” Rooney said on The Wayne Rooney Show.

A Growing Understanding With Florian Wirtz

One of the standout talking points from the match was Ekitike’s developing partnership with Florian Wirtz. Rooney highlighted the chemistry between the two attackers, suggesting it could become a defining feature of Liverpool’s attack.

“His Liverpool career just hasn’t got up and going yet. Obviously they paid a lot of money for him, and these two [Wirtz and Ekitike] seem to have a real good understanding of each other’s game and they look like a real threat,” Rooney explained.

Their movement, timing, and link-up play consistently unsettled Newcastle’s defence, offering a glimpse of what Liverpool could build around.

Romario Comparisons Raise Eyebrows

Rooney reserved his highest praise for Ekitike’s second goal, comparing the finish to Brazilian icon Romario — a comparison rarely made lightly.

“Ekitike’s second goal in particular was brilliant. It reminds me of Romario. A little toe-poke goal, but it’s instinctive,” Rooney said.

The goal showcased the striker’s natural feel for space, quick decision-making, and elite finishing instincts — traits that separate good forwards from great ones.

A Modern Forward With Multiple Dimensions

Beyond goals, Rooney praised Ekitike’s all-round contribution, describing him as a modern striker capable of influencing games in several ways. His movement, link-up play, and ability to combine with creative midfielders give Liverpool tactical flexibility.

For a club navigating injuries and competition at the top end of the pitch, Ekitike’s performance may have changed the conversation.

Whether he ultimately displaces Isak remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: Hugo Ekitike has Rooney’s attention — and possibly Liverpool’s future.
