Trinity Rodman Becomes World’s Highest-Paid Female Footballer With Washington Spirit
Trinity Rodman, the 23-year-old United States forward and daughter of NBA legend Dennis Rodman, has officially become the world’s highest-paid female footballer after signing a landmark deal with Washington Spirit.
The forward, who had been a free agent since her previous contract expired on 31 December 2025, will now remain at the Spirit until 2028, under a reported $2 million per year deal, including bonuses.
Rodman Reacts To Historic Deal
“It feels amazing. I’m very happy. I’m very blessed,” Rodman told ESPN. “I think it’s a monumental and game-changing moment right now. I can’t even describe in words what it feels like.”
Rodman has already made a significant mark in women’s football. She helped Washington Spirit secure the NWSL Championship in 2021 and was named NWSL Rookie of the Year in the same season. She has earned 47 caps for the USA, scoring 11 goals since her debut in 2022, including three goals at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where the USA won gold.
Breaking Records And Changing The Game
Before Rodman’s new contract, Barcelona midfielder Aitana Bonmati — a three-time Ballon d’Or winner — was reportedly the highest-earning female player in the world. The new deal was made possible thanks to the NWSL’s new ‘High Impact Player’ rule, allowing teams to spend up to $1 million above the salary cap for top-tier talents.
Washington Spirit owner Michele Kang emphasized Rodman’s importance:
“Trinity is a generational player, but more importantly she represents the future of this club and the future of women’s soccer.”
Global Interest And NWSL Retention Battle
Rodman’s talent attracted attention from Europe’s top clubs, including Chelsea, who were monitoring her free agency closely. The NWSL and Washington Spirit navigated legal and financial hurdles to ensure they retained one of the league’s brightest stars.
With US players like Naomi Girma, Alyssa Thompson, and Sam Coffey moving to Chelsea and Manchester City, retaining Rodman is a significant coup for the NWSL and a signal that American women’s football remains a global powerhouse.
The Rise Of Women’s Football Salaries
While Rodman is only 23, her new contract reflects the increasing investment in women’s football worldwide. Clubs like Barcelona, Lyon, and London City Lionesses — all under the ownership and backing of billionaires like Kang — are pushing wages higher, meaning the future of the women’s game is set to be more lucrative and competitive than ever.
Rodman’s new deal is not just a personal milestone; it is a defining moment for the growth and professionalization of women’s football worldwide.
