‘That’s The Way It Is!’ – Steven Gerrard Urges Arne Slot To Stop Mentioning Low Blocks After Liverpool Struggles

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has urged Reds manager Arne Slot to stop citing low blocks as the reason behind Liverpool’s inconsistency in the 2025-26 season. The Dutch coach recently explained that his side struggle against teams that sit deep, but Gerrard insists this has always been part of football and it’s Slot’s job to find solutions.

Liverpool’s Record-Breaking Investment Failing to Deliver

Last season, Liverpool surged to Premier League glory, with Slot receiving praise for stepping into Jurgen Klopp’s shoes. The summer of 2025 saw record-breaking spending, bringing in players like Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz, aimed at building a new dynasty on Merseyside.

However, the anticipated impact has been limited. Domestic form has been inconsistent, with the Reds now battling to secure a top-four finish. European outings have been more encouraging, including a 3-0 win over Marseille, but domestic questions linger.

Slot Explains Liverpool’s Low-Block Struggles

After the Marseille match, Slot revealed why Liverpool appear inconsistent:

“Our reason why we’re inconsistent… has all to do with us struggling against low blocks… You need completely different quality against the low block. It has not so much to do with what you prepare before the game… Every game we’ve played this season when both teams want to play out from the back, where both teams want to press, we’ve played very good games.”

The Reds boss argued that open games allow his tactics to flourish, whereas low-block opponents require a different approach.

Gerrard Demands Solutions, Not Excuses

Gerrard, however, dismissed the explanation, urging Slot to focus on results:

“He needs to stop mentioning low blocks. Low blocks have been happening at Liverpool since I played and many, many years before me. That’s just the way it is… The key is finding solutions. You’ve got the players. Then you’ll turn the low-block games into wins rather than draws… They’ve got to be ruthless and the big players have got to step forward and score the goals to win games.”

For Gerrard, the onus is on Slot to solve the problem, not talk about it, emphasizing that Liverpool have the talent to overcome defensive setups.

Liverpool now face Bournemouth in the Premier League, where Gerrard expects the Reds’ key players to deliver and turn the next low-block encounter into a victory.
