FIFA Hails Nigeria’s Massive Rise As Super Eagles Soar To 26th In World Rankings

FIFA has officially applauded Nigeria’s remarkable resurgence on the global stage after the Super Eagles recorded one of the biggest jumps in the latest FIFA Men’s World Ranking.

Following an impressive bronze medal finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, Nigeria surged 12 places up the rankings, moving from 36th to 26th in the world.

The leap represents Nigeria’s highest ranking position in 16 years, matching levels last reached in 2010, and confirms the Super Eagles as the third-best team in Africa, behind only Morocco and Senegal.

A Ranking Built On Substance, Not Hype

Nigeria’s rise is no coincidence. Under head coach Eric Chelle, the Super Eagles delivered a tournament defined by discipline, tactical clarity, and consistency.

The team won six of their seven matches at AFCON 2025, with their only setback coming in a tense semi-final defeat to host nation Morocco via penalties. They bounced back strongly to secure bronze, underlining their mental resilience.

FIFA highlighted Nigeria’s progress in its official communication, revealing that the Super Eagles gained +79.09 ranking points, the highest increase by any country worldwide in this ranking cycle.

“A massive leap for @FecafootOfficie and @thenff. Both Cameroon and Nigeria have soared 12 places in the latest FIFA/Coca-Cola Men’s World Ranking after an incredible start to 2026.” — FIFA Official Statement

Continental Authority Restored

Nigeria’s climb has significantly reshaped the African football hierarchy.

By rising to 26th, the Super Eagles now sit well clear of several continental rivals, reinforcing their dominance in West Africa. Although Cameroon also enjoyed a 12-place jump to 45th, Nigeria remain comfortably ahead of traditional heavyweights such as Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire.

Beyond pride, the improved ranking carries real competitive value. A higher FIFA position can result in more favourable seedings in future AFCON draws and World Cup qualifying pathways, reducing the risk of early clashes with elite opponents.

The Chelle Revolution Gains Global Recognition

For a national team rebuilding confidence after recent inconsistencies, this recognition from FIFA is a major validation. It signals that Nigeria are not just improving aesthetically but making measurable progress that resonates globally.

As preparations begin for the 2027 AFCON and the next World Cup cycle, the Super Eagles’ ranking surge suggests that the foundations laid by Eric Chelle are already producing tangible, long-term results.

Nigeria are back among the elite — and this time, the numbers back it up.
