Revealed: Real Madrid’s Stance On Xabi Alonso’s Future As Manager After Supercopa Clasico Defeat
Real Madrid have provided clarity on the future of manager Xabi Alonso following their 3-2 defeat to Barcelona in the Spanish Supercopa final in Saudi Arabia. Despite losing to their arch-rivals in Jeddah, the club insists that Alonso’s position is safe, emphasizing patience and analysis over immediate action.
Clasico Challenges for Alonso
Alonso, who returned to Real Madrid in the summer of 2025 after succeeding Carlo Ancelotti, has endured a baptism of fire under the Bernabeu spotlight. After a memorable league Clasico win in October 2025 that ended a four-game losing streak against Barcelona, Alonso saw his side fall short in the Supercopa.
The defeat marks five losses in six meetings with Barca, a statistic that has naturally generated pressure from fans and media alike. Alonso has also struggled for consistency, winning just two of eight matches between November 4 and December 10.
Real Madrid’s Stance
Reports from AS journalist Jose Feliz Diaz confirm that Real Madrid are prepared to support Alonso rather than issue an ultimatum:
“Despite the defeat against Barcelona, the manager’s job is not in danger. It’s a time for analysis and finding solutions to the team’s problems… Real Madrid’s performance in the final of the first title of the season opens the door to improved performance, rather than directly pointing the finger at the coach.”
The club acknowledges the difficulty Alonso has faced this season, particularly with injuries to key players.
Injury Woes and Support
Real Madrid’s recent campaign has been plagued by injuries, impacting Alonso’s ability to field a consistent squad. Ferland Mendy and Dean Huijsen are among the latest to be sidelined with serious muscle strains. The club intends to work closely with the coaching staff to improve the team’s fitness and overall performance.
“The first priority, without a doubt, is physical improvement and finally halting the haemorrhaging of injuries plaguing the Real Madrid squad… At Valdebebas, they believe there’s still time to have a good season, but that hinges on improving the team’s physical condition,” Diaz reported.
The Road Ahead
Rather than reacting to one setback, Real Madrid are focused on long-term solutions. With patience from the board and a focus on improving player fitness, Alonso has the chance to steer Los Blancos back on track for the remainder of the season.
