Cooper Flagg Makes NBA History At 18 Despite Mavericks Overtime Loss

Cooper Flagg may be just 18 years old, but he is already rewriting NBA history.

The Dallas Mavericks rookie delivered a stunning performance at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City, becoming the youngest player ever to score 40 or more points in an NBA game, even as Dallas fell 140–133 in overtime to the Utah Jazz.

Flagg finished the night with 42 points, seven rebounds, and six assists, a stat line that confirmed what scouts have long believed — this is not a normal rookie.

A Night For The History Books

Selected first overall in the 2025 NBA Draft, Flagg showed why the Mavericks placed their future in his hands.

At just 18 years old, he joins elite company. Only Cliff Robinson (45), GG Jackson (44), and LeBron James (43) have scored more points in a single game as teenagers. Flagg also matched Mark Aguirre’s long-standing franchise record for most points by a Mavericks rookie.

Even more impressively, Flagg became only the third teenager in NBA history — after LeBron James and Kevin Durant — to record 40+ points, five rebounds, and five assists in a game.

He turns 19 on Sunday.

How The Game Slipped Away

Dallas were in control for much of the contest.

The Mavericks led 75–71 at halftime, with Flagg already on 24 points, and later held a 124–116 lead late in the fourth quarter. But defensive lapses allowed Utah to claw back, taking a 129–127 lead.

Two clutch free throws from Max Christie with under five seconds remaining forced overtime, but the Jazz took full control in the extra period.

Utah sealed their 10th win of the season, powered by Keyonte George’s 37 points and Lauri Markkanen’s 33.

The Jazz now sit 10th in the Western Conference, while Dallas remain 12th.

Who Is Cooper Flagg?

Flagg’s rise has been anything but accidental.

Standing 6ft 8in, he first made headlines by becoming the first freshman named Maine Player of the Year, leading Nokomis Regional High School to a state title in 2021.

He later transferred to Montverde Academy in Florida, where his dominance earned him:

• 2022 USA Basketball Male Athlete of the Year

• 2024 National High School Player of the Year

On the international stage, Flagg was part of the USA team that won the 2022 Under-17 World Cup, earning a place on the all-tournament team.

At Duke University, his lone college season was historic. He averaged 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 4.2 assists, led Duke to the Final Four, and was named National College Player of the Year.

A Franchise Cornerstone In The Making

After making his NBA debut against the San Antonio Spurs in October, Flagg is now averaging:

• 17.5 points

• 6.3 rebounds

• 3.4 assists
  across 25 games for the Mavericks.

Loss or not, this performance sent a clear message to the league: Cooper Flagg has arrived.

For Dallas, the future may already be standing right in front of them.
