Wayne Rooney Compares Enzo Maresca To Mohamed Salah After Chelsea Boss’ Cryptic Outburst

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has found himself at the centre of intense debate after former Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney compared his recent media outburst to Mohamed Salah’s controversial comments at Liverpool.

Rooney believes Maresca’s remarks following Chelsea’s 2-0 Premier League win over Everton were “premeditated”, and he has warned that the Italian may now be left without protection if results start to dip at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea Beat Everton, But Focus Shifts Off The Pitch

Chelsea returned to winning ways with a controlled 2-0 victory over Everton, with goals from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto lifting the Blues back into the Premier League’s top four. The result eased pressure after recent defeats to Leeds and Atalanta and a frustrating draw with Bournemouth.

Despite the positive performance, the post-match conversation quickly shifted away from the football. Maresca described the build-up to the game as “the worst 48 hours” of his Chelsea tenure, hinting that he and his squad felt unsupported during a difficult period.

Although the Italian later clarified that his comments were not directed at supporters, he declined to explain who they were aimed at, leaving room for speculation about internal tensions with the club’s hierarchy.

Rooney Draws Parallels With Salah Situation

Wayne Rooney was quick to offer his interpretation, suggesting Maresca’s comments were carefully calculated rather than emotional. Speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show, the former England striker said the situation reminded him of Mohamed Salah’s recent media stance at Liverpool.

“For me it was very similar to the Mo Salah situation last week where it was very premeditated,” Rooney said. “He knows exactly what he is saying and who he is aiming it at, and the board and owners at Chelsea will know it is aimed at them.”

Rooney believes Maresca deliberately chose to go public, possibly as a way of protecting himself amid pressure behind the scenes.

‘No Protection’ Warning For Maresca

The Manchester United legend also warned that Maresca’s approach could prove costly in a club known for managerial instability.

“You’ve got to respect the owners of a football club,” Rooney added. “They employ you and bring you in, so it’s their way. I feel he’s gone a bit against that.”

Rooney questioned whether Maresca acted out of frustration, fear for his job, or internal disagreement, but stressed that the consequences could be serious.

“I don’t think he’ll get the protection now he’s come out and done what he has done. That will be very difficult for the club to come and protect him, which is a shame.”

Chelsea Success Mixed With Ongoing Instability

Maresca’s Chelsea reign has been a mix of tangible success and persistent uncertainty. Since his appointment, he has delivered trophies — including European silverware and a Club World Cup — and guided the Blues back into Champions League contention.

However, league consistency has remained elusive. Tactical experimentation, injuries, and squad rotation have contributed to uneven performances, leaving little margin for error during short runs of poor form.

Against that backdrop, Maresca’s public frustration appears to mark a turning point — one that could either strengthen his authority or expose him further if results falter.

As Chelsea head into a demanding fixture run, attention will be firmly fixed not only on performances, but on how the club responds if pressure mounts again. For Maresca, Rooney’s warning is clear: once you step into the spotlight, protection can disappear quickly at a club like Chelsea.
