AFCON 2025
Former Super Eagles Star Friday Ekpo Backs Eric Chelle’s AFCON Squad Decisions
Former Super Eagles midfielder Friday Ekpo has come out in defence of head coach Eric Chelle following the release of Nigeria’s 28-man squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Chelle’s squad, which consists of three goalkeepers, eight defenders, eight midfielders, and nine forwards, has attracted attention for the number of fresh faces being introduced. Among these newcomers are Ryan Alebiosu (Blackburn Rovers), Ebenezer Akinsanmiro (Pisa), Usman Muhammed (Israel), Tochukwu Nnadi (Zulte Waregem), and Lawal Salim Fago (Istra 1961).
Speaking to Completesports.com, Ekpo emphasised that Chelle’s selections are guided by careful consideration, particularly in light of injuries affecting some established players. “Every good player that is not listed in the Super Eagles final squad for AFCON, I believe Eric Chelle knows why,” Ekpo stated.
He further explained, “For the injured players, I think the coach must have considered the timing of the matches and their fitness date.” Ekpo highlighted the value of introducing new players into the squad, noting that this is part of the natural evolution of any successful national team.
“Normally, every player takes over from another at some point. The introduction of new players is not a bad idea because these are the players that will form the bedrock of the Super Eagles later,” he added. However, he did acknowledge that it would have been beneficial if some of these players had been involved in the qualifiers leading up to the tournament.
Looking ahead, Nigeria will compete in Group C, facing Tanzania on December 23, Tunisia on December 27, and Uganda on December 30. With high expectations on the shoulders of the three-time African champions, the Super Eagles aim to secure their fourth continental title in Morocco.
