Chelsea’s ownership group has reportedly pulled off another major youth transfer coup, securing a deal for highly rated 16-year-old Mohamed Zongo ahead of Manchester United and Manchester City. The Burkina Faso midfielder is expected to officially join Strasbourg — part of Chelsea’s BlueCo network — when he turns 18 in 2027.

According to The Athletic, both Manchester clubs made formal approaches to Sporting Football des Cascades Tenakourou after being impressed with Zongo’s performances and versatility.

Manchester City saw him as a natural fit for their multi-club development model, while Manchester United’s INEOS-backed recruitment drive has placed renewed emphasis on elite youth talent. Zongo’s ability to play as a No. 10, a roaming midfielder, or an advanced creator made him one of the standout options available on the African talent market.

Some scouts have even described him as a “next-gen Yaya Touré”, praising his physical maturity, long-range ball progression, and calmness under pressure.

Strasbourg Chosen As The Best Development Path

Zongo lit up the Under-17 World Cup in Qatar, where Burkina Faso reached the quarter-finals. The youngster appeared in all six of their matches, scoring twice and providing three assists. His standout performance came in the knockout win over Germany, and he came agonisingly close to scoring against Italy in the quarter-final, hitting the woodwork twice.

Strasbourg has now been identified as the ideal destination for his growth. The club’s strong reputation for developing young players — combined with its direct link to Chelsea through the BlueCo ownership structure — reportedly helped tip the deal in their favour.
