Toni Payne celebrating after assisting Everton’s winning goal against Chelsea
Everton shocked the Women’s Super League on Sunday as Toni Payne delivered the assist that sealed a dramatic 1–0 win over Chelsea, ending the Blues’ long unbeaten run and lifting the Toffees further up the table.
It was a performance packed with intensity, hard work, and a bit of Payne magic.
The breakthrough came early.
Inside the first 10 minutes, Toni Payne threaded a perfect pass to Honoka Hayashi, who finished calmly to score what would become the match-winner.
For Payne, it’s another statement performance. After scoring and assisting in Everton’s previous match against Newcastle United, she followed it up with another influential outing before being subbed off in the 67th minute.
She is clearly in a rich vein of form — and Everton are benefiting from it.
Chelsea came into the match unbeaten in the league since May 2024, but Everton shut them down with discipline and tactical sharpness.
The defeat stunned the Blues, who were expected to dominate the fixture. Instead, they were forced to chase the game, struggle in the final third, and ultimately accept their first league loss in months.
This massive result boosts Brian Sørensen’s side to ninth place in the WSL — a significant jump and a big confidence booster ahead of a tough run of matches.
Everton now host Arsenal next, and with back-to-back strong performances, they’ll be feeling dangerous.
Meanwhile, Chelsea will need to regroup quickly as they navigate the pressure of defending their title.
Toni Payne is proving to be one of Everton’s most influential players this season, and her ability to deliver in big moments once again made the difference.
With momentum shifting and the WSL table tightening, this season is shaping up to be one of the most exciting in recent years.
