Marc Guehi’s Contract Countdown: Why Europe’s Giants Are Lining Up For The Crystal Palace Captain
In just 34 days, Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi can officially negotiate a free move abroad — and the race is already heating up across Europe. His contract expires on 30 June 2026, and once the winter transfer window opens on 1 January, the 25-year-old becomes one of football’s most valuable free-agent opportunities.
It’s rare for a Premier League club to let a key defender get this close to walking away for nothing… but here we are.
Liverpool’s £35m “What Could Have Been”
In the summer, Liverpool had a clear shot at signing Guehi for £35 million. The negotiations dragged on for weeks, fans thought the deal was close, but it collapsed when Palace couldn’t sign a replacement. Manager Oliver Glasner insisted on keeping his leader at the back, especially after the sale of Eberechi Eze to Arsenal.
Now?
The Reds may have to fight harder — and against bigger rivals — if they want a second chance.
Europe Joins The Queue
While Liverpool still admire the England international, they’re no longer alone. European heavyweights are circling.
Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Juventus, and a handful of top Serie A clubs are all understood to be monitoring the situation. And why not? Free transfers for Premier League-proven, 25-year-old centre-backs don’t come around often.
One of the most respected voices in European football, Guillem Balague, put it simply:
“Guehi fits Real Madrid’s model.”
Madrid’s reasons are clear:
-
Rudiger is in his 30s
-
Alaba has lost pace since his long injury
-
Militão is elite but injury-prone
-
Youth options have not fully convinced
Guehi brings leadership, speed, positioning, decision-making, and Premier League toughness. He could walk into many starting lineups without a transition period.
Liverpool’s Konaté Complication
Meanwhile, Liverpool have their own contract drama.
Ibrahima Konaté, linked earlier with Real Madrid, is entering the final months of his deal. Reports now suggest Madrid have cooled their interest, but the uncertainty around his form and future has added pressure at Anfield.
Both situations — Guehi and Konaté — could directly affect each other as Europe reshapes its defensive market.
Could Palace Actually Lose Him For Free?
Unless the club manages a miracle negotiation, all signs point to yes.
Palace chose stability over money in the summer… but next year they may pay the price. Losing Eze and possibly Guehi within one season could reshape the club’s long-term identity.
For now, all Guehi needs to do is stay fit, stay consistent, and stay calm — because the phone calls from Europe will be nonstop.
