Liverpool Ready To Trigger £65m Semenyo Clause Amid January Transfer Frenzy – City, United, Spurs In Pursuit

Liverpool are reportedly weighing a £65 million move for Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo in the January transfer window, as the Premier League giants look to bolster their attacking options.

The 25-year-old Ghana international has a £65m ($85m) release clause in the five-year deal he signed with Bournemouth this summer, meaning interested clubs can trigger it during the opening days of the January window.

Bournemouth’s Stance

Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola has been clear that Semenyo remains fully committed to the south coast club for now. Speaking last week, Iraola said:

“We are in November. Antoine is our player, he will continue being our player. In January, you can ask me about the market, but right now I’m not worried about it. It’s November. I’m focused on the short-term situation, the players, and what really matters.”

Despite the manager’s stance, Liverpool—and other Premier League suitors—are closely monitoring the situation.

Liverpool’s Recruitment Strategy

According to The I Paper, Liverpool see Semenyo as a potential long-term solution to complement or eventually succeed Mohamed Salah, whose output has dipped this season with just five goals in 17 league appearances. Semenyo, by contrast, has netted six times in 11 Premier League games, showcasing his attacking prowess.

Liverpool reportedly have first refusal in the January window to trigger Semenyo’s release clause and are considered front-runners, though Manchester City, Tottenham, and Manchester United are also monitoring the player. Pep Guardiola’s City are likely to wait until the summer, when the release clause reportedly drops below £60m ($79m).

Form Could Influence January Move

Liverpool’s current struggles—12th in the Premier League and nine defeats in their last 12 games in all competitions—could influence whether the Reds pursue Semenyo in January. As one source told The I Paper:

“Recruitment is data-driven and scientific, but football clubs are also emotion-led. When Semenyo’s stats were strong at the start of the season, £65m looked a bargain. If there’s a slight drop-off now, January may not be the right time.”

Liverpool’s form between now and January could therefore determine whether Semenyo makes the move to Anfield mid-season or waits until the summer transfer window.
