Xabi Alonso Hasn’t Changed! Real Madrid Coach Has Had Same Philosophy Since His Playing Days, Says Ex-Team-Mate Karim Benzema

Benzema Praises Alonso’s Consistent Philosophy

Karim Benzema has spoken highly of Xabi Alonso, insisting that Real Madrid’s head coach has maintained the same footballing philosophy that made him a World Cup-winning midfielder. Alonso, who succeeded Carlo Ancelotti at the Bernabeu last season, has been under intense scrutiny despite a strong start to the 2025-26 campaign.

Speaking to AS, Benzema said, “I remember when we played together, and it’s the same now as a coach. Pressure, vertical passing… It’s a style of play I like. He’s only been there for six months, and he’s doing an excellent job. He needs to be given time.”

‘Xabi-Ball’ In Full Swing

Alonso’s Real Madrid has impressed for the most part, winning their first six La Liga matches before suffering a 5-2 defeat to Atletico Madrid. Since then, the team has gone on a seven-game winning streak, highlighted by a brilliant 2-1 El Clasico victory over Barcelona.

Stars like Kylian Mbappe, who has 18 goals in 16 games this season, and Arda Guler have become pivotal figures in Alonso’s system. Even with a recent goalless draw at Rayo Vallecano and a 1-0 Champions League loss to Liverpool, the squad remains top of La Liga and in a strong position in Europe.

Defending Alonso Amid Criticism

Despite media speculation about a supposed crisis at Madrid, Benzema remains confident in Alonso’s methods. “There’s a lot of talk about it now, but it’s always like this. If they draw or lose, it’s a crisis. They go from being the best team in the world to questioning the coach, this player or that player… It’s normal because they’re the best team in the world. But I like this team.”

Even Carlo Ancelotti, who coached Alonso at Bayern Munich, praised his former teammate, noting the solidity of Madrid’s defense and the effectiveness upfront. “Leading the league and among the top eight in the Champions League. What more can we ask of Xabi? I see a solid team, especially in defense, and very effective upfront.”

Alonso’s Future Looks Bright

With Mbappe thriving, Jude Bellingham back in form, and Benzema giving full backing, Alonso appears well-positioned to navigate the pressures of the Bernabeu. His philosophy, rooted in vertical passing and high-pressure football, is clearly resonating with the squad, and Benzema believes patience is key.

As Real Madrid push for domestic and European glory, the former midfielder’s coaching identity remains unchanged — and, according to Benzema, that consistency could be the key to long-term success.
