DR Congo preparing for 2026 World Cup play-off match in Guadalajara, Mexico
Nigeria’s Super Eagles are edging closer to missing out on the 2026 FIFA World Cup after FIFA effectively confirmed DR Congo as Africa’s representative in the inter-confederation play-offs.
Despite hopes from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) that the Leopards could be disqualified, recent developments indicate FIFA is proceeding with DR Congo.
In an interview featured on FIFA’s official website, DR Congo head coach Sebastien Desabre provided insight into his squad’s preparations ahead of their winner-takes-all match. The Leopards will face either Jamaica or New Caledonia on March 31 in Guadalajara, Mexico for a spot in the 2026 World Cup.
Desabre expressed confidence in his players, stating:
“We’re not afraid of anyone. We’re going to give it our all. As a minimum, we need to replicate the kind of performance we delivered against Nigeria.”
A win would see DR Congo return to the World Cup for the first time since 1974.
The Super Eagles’ disappointment stems from their failure to capitalize on previous opportunities. Even after receiving a lifeline via the playoffs, Nigeria fell to DR Congo on penalties, ultimately undermining their chances of progressing to the inter-confederation tournament.
FIFA’s framing of DR Congo as Africa’s official representative, without mention of Nigeria’s appeal, signals a clear position on the matter and diminishes the Super Eagles’ pathway to the 2026 tournament.
With DR Congo preparing in earnest for their high-stakes match, Nigeria must reconcile with the growing reality that their 2026 World Cup hopes are slipping away. The focus now shifts to learning from setbacks and strengthening the squad for future international campaigns.
