Revealed: Ruben Amorim Singled Out Manuel Ugarte For Brutal Criticism In Front Of Entire Man Utd Squad After Europa League Final Defeat
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has reportedly delivered a harsh dressing down to midfielder Manuel Ugarte in front of the entire squad following their 1-0 Europa League final loss to Tottenham.
Despite being an unused substitute in the final, the Uruguay international attracted criticism from Amorim, who called a team meeting ahead of the Premier League season closer against Aston Villa at Old Trafford. The Portuguese tactician is known for his direct and no-nonsense approach, and Ugarte was reportedly told that he had “gotten comfortable” and was no longer the player Amorim had worked with during their time at Sporting Lisbon.
Amorim’s Approach To Team Meetings
The meeting reportedly included the full Red Devils squad, with Amorim using the session to stress that 100% commitment to the collective cause is required at all times. The coach is said to have also singled out Alejandro Garnacho, telling him he would need a “good agent” during the summer window—a statement that preceded Garnacho’s transfer to Chelsea.
Amorim’s methods are described as hard but broadly fair, preferring to tackle issues within a group setting rather than through private conversations. While this approach has sparked discussions among players, some of the squad reportedly believe more tailored instructions would be beneficial.
Maintaining Authority
Amorim reportedly keeps a strict boundary with players, avoiding social activities to maintain a sense of authority. He emphasizes that players on the fringes of the squad must prove their worth in training rather than through direct confrontations or excuses.
An all-staff meeting ahead of the 2025-26 season reiterated the need for professionalism and discipline, with Amorim citing lateness and poor preparation as examples of behaviour that would not be tolerated. While some players may question his style, club staff and management appreciate his candour and passion, with Amorim a familiar figure at United’s company summits.
