Liverpool’s Title Defence In Tatters As Arne Slot Faces Tough Choices For A Brighter Future

Liverpool’s woeful Premier League title defence appears to be over after just 11 matches, as Arne Slot’s side fell 3-0 to Manchester City at the Etihad on Sunday. With five defeats already, the Reds’ hopes of retaining their crown are fading fast — and the focus has now shifted from defending the title to salvaging pride and building for the future.

Slot, in his post-match comments, tried to maintain optimism, suggesting that teams should only be judged at the end of the season. However, even he admitted, “It feels like too many [defeats]. The last thing I should speak about is the title race, as the reality is that we are eighth.”

VAR Controversy But No Excuse

Liverpool had a Virgil van Dijk equaliser controversially ruled out, but Slot refused to hide behind the decision. “In the first half, they were better than us in every aspect of football,” he confessed.

The stats backed him up — only one shot on target all game, over 60% of duels lost, and almost no sign of the intensity that defined Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp. Pundits were quick to agree. “You can’t be considering Liverpool for the title,” said former Manchester United captain Roy Keane. “They looked technically and physically worse than City. The lack of energy, poor decision-making, and flat performances say it all.”

Refusing To Blame The Players

Despite criticism, Slot defended his players’ attitude, arguing that tactical confusion, not lack of effort, cost them the game. “They [City] brought so many players into central areas, it was difficult for ours to make the right decisions,” he said.

However, Keane countered that sentiment sharply: “It’s easy to play well when the game’s already gone.”

£400 Million Spent, Yet Weaker Than Before

Liverpool’s transfer activity has also come under scrutiny. The club spent over £400 million during the summer, but results have only worsened. New signings like Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez have struggled to adapt, while injuries to Jeremie Frimpong and Alexander Isak have disrupted consistency.

Former Liverpool striker Dean Sturridge believes chemistry is the biggest issue. “Last season they had more consistency because Slot inherited a Klopp-built squad. But now, with so many changes, some players haven’t adapted. The Premier League’s intensity is shocking to new arrivals, and that’s showing.”

What Next For Slot?

With the Reds sitting in eighth place, Slot faces a defining moment. He must decide whether to persist with underperforming stars or make bold tactical and selection changes. The title race may be over, but Liverpool’s long-term rebuild under Slot begins now.

The coming months will test not only his tactics but his authority — and whether he can restore belief to a team that once thrived on it.
