Jay-Jay Okocha Opens Up on Challenges as Delta FA Chairman: “I Used My Own Money to Run the FA”

Former Super Eagles captain and football legend Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha has opened up about the difficulties he faced during his tenure as Chairman of the Delta State Football Association (FA).

In a candid revelation, Okocha shared that his plans to develop football in Delta State were repeatedly frustrated by poor collaboration and a lack of institutional support from key stakeholders.

Okocha Personally Funded the FA

The former Nigerian international revealed that he had to use his personal funds to run football programs in the state due to the absence of financial backing.

“I had a boss that was not willing to work with me. I was a bit uncomfortable, and he didn’t understand me well,” Okocha said.

He continued, “I was using my own money to run the FA. I did it for two years, even organized the FA Cup with my money. But in the second year, I didn’t have the structure or resources to attract investors.”

Lack of Support Hindered His Vision

Okocha further explained that the lack of cooperation and institutional structure made it difficult to achieve his vision for football development in Delta State.

“I said there was no need to continue because I’m not the kind of person who likes to stay where they don’t appreciate what I do,” he added.

Despite these challenges, Okocha remains one of Nigeria’s most respected football icons, celebrated for his creativity, leadership, and contributions to both Nigerian and African football.
