Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo celebrating goals for Inter Miami and Al Nassr respectively
The GOAT rivalry between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo is far from over — and now, both superstars could be on course to join an even more exclusive club: the 1,000-goal mark.
At 40 years old, Cristiano Ronaldo continues to defy time and logic. The Portuguese icon, now with Al Nassr in the Saudi Pro League, has scored over 950 career goals across club and country — a tally that includes:
450 goals for Real Madrid (their all-time record),
143 goals for Portugal, and
A combined haul from spells at Sporting CP, Manchester United, and Juventus.
Ronaldo has made it clear he’s not stopping until he reaches 1,000 career goals, and judging by his fitness and form, few would bet against him.
On the other side of the globe, Lionel Messi is having a dream run in the Major League Soccer (MLS) with Inter Miami.
The Argentine captain — fresh off winning the 2025 MLS Golden Boot — has notched 42 goals this season, firing Miami into the Conference semi-finals and proving that his magic remains intact.
With over 900 career goals already, Messi’s recent contract extension until 2028 means that the 1,000-goal milestone is well within his reach too.
Former Dutch international Wesley Sneijder, who played alongside Ronaldo at Real Madrid, believes both players will achieve the unthinkable.
“Cristiano won’t stop before reaching a thousand goals. Messi has signed another two-year deal. He will definitely reach one thousand goals as well,” Sneijder told AdventureGamers.com.
“It’s nice that we are still talking about this rivalry with one in MLS and the other in Saudi. Maybe next, we’ll count their assists to see who can get to 2,000 first.”
Even as both legends continue to make history, Sneijder is tired of the endless debate over who’s better.
“For me, it’s always been a stupid argument because they are two completely different players,” he said.
“Who is better — Cruyff or Pele? Pele or Maradona? We shouldn’t compare them. They are both amazing. I’ve been asked this maybe 200 times — 100 times I vote for Messi, 100 times I vote for Ronaldo.”
With both Messi and Ronaldo still scoring, still competing, and still inspiring, football fans across the world are witnessing a rivalry that may never be replicated.
Whether it’s in Miami or Riyadh, one thing remains clear: the chase for 1,000 goals isn’t just a record — it’s a symbol of excellence, longevity, and legacy.
