‘Fair Play!’ – Wayne Rooney Ends Feud With Virgil Van Dijk After Awkward TV Exchange
Wayne Rooney has finally drawn a line under his supposed feud with Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk, bringing a refreshing end to one of football’s more unexpected spats.
The Manchester United legend and the Dutch defender found themselves in headlines after a tense on-air moment during Liverpool’s Champions League post-match coverage on Amazon Prime, following the Reds’ 1–0 win over Real Madrid.
The Origin Of The Feud
Before the match, Rooney criticised Van Dijk and the Liverpool squad for letting their standards slip during a shaky Premier League title defence, calling out the captain for not leading strongly enough during a run of six defeats in seven games.
Van Dijk, known for his calm demeanour, hit back by saying:
“I didn’t hear him last year. It doesn’t hurt me. He’s a legend, but that comment is just a bit of a lazy criticism.”
The Awkward On-Air Moment
Things escalated when Van Dijk unexpectedly appeared on the Amazon Prime panel after the Real Madrid victory. Rooney, who was on pundit duty, looked visibly surprised when the Liverpool captain took the microphone and addressed some of the criticism head-on.
Van Dijk calmly explained that his leadership approach was about staying composed during chaos, revealing that he had organised team meetings and bonding sessions to steady the squad.
Rooney’s Response
Addressing the incident on his BBC Sport podcast, Rooney cleared the air, praising Van Dijk’s professionalism and performance that night:
“Fair play to him for coming out. We didn’t know he was coming; it was meant to be Szoboszlai. He came and made his point, and that’s what a leader does.”
Rooney also acknowledged the defender’s class and consistency:
“Over the last five years, Van Dijk has been one of the best centre-backs in the world. His form dipped a bit, but he’s back performing well. You want to see top players doing what they do best.”
A Rivalry Turned Respect
Despite their club allegiances and the occasional heated debate, the moment ended with mutual respect between two modern greats. Rooney’s open praise and Van Dijk’s maturity have turned what could have been an ongoing feud into a fine example of professional respect and leadership in modern football.
