Victor Osimhen Reveals Mind Game Behind His Stunning Hat-Trick Against Ajax

Victor Osimhen’s Tactical Masterclass Against Ajax

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen once again proved why he’s one of the most dangerous forwards in world football, leading Galatasaray to a dominant 3-0 victory over Ajax in the Champions League.

The Nigerian star didn’t just score — he outsmarted Ajax’s defense with a brilliant blend of movement, deception, and timing. His opening goal set the tone for a historic night that saw him claim a sensational hat-trick.

The Psychology Behind The Goal

Speaking to UEFA after the match, Osimhen broke down the mind game that confused Ajax’s defenders and opened the door for his first goal.

“I had to go in front of the defender, do like I was going to move ahead of him, and then go behind him. So he couldn’t figure out where I was,” he explained. “And Leroy [Sané], you know he can give this kind of pass.”

That subtle feint — moving forward to bait the defender before slipping behind — was enough to disrupt Ajax’s defensive communication. It was the very weakness Ajax coach John Heitinga had warned his players about before the game.

The result? Osimhen ghosted in behind, meeting Sané’s cross with a thunderous header to open the scoring.

History Made In Amsterdam

That first goal was just the beginning. Osimhen went on to score two more, completely dismantling Ajax’s defense and becoming the first Galatasaray player to net consecutive Champions League braces.

Each goal was a masterclass in anticipation and instinct — proof that elite finishing is as much about mind games as it is about physical power.

“Bring Your A-Game” Mentality

Reflecting on the night, Osimhen credited his focus and experience for the performance:

“We were here last year, in the Europa League, so we knew what we would face. Ajax are not an easy team, they have an identity. When you play in this kind of stadium you know you have to bring your A-game.”

And that’s exactly what he did. From his awareness to his execution, Osimhen’s hat-trick wasn’t just a highlight reel — it was a lesson in tactical maturity and mental sharpness.

The Osimhen Effect

For Galatasaray, the victory solidified their position in the Champions League group, but for Osimhen, it was something more — a statement of dominance.

He didn’t just beat Ajax; he outthought them. And in the process, he reminded Europe that his game is as cerebral as it is explosive.
