Gary O’Neil In Talks For Shock Return To Wolves After Vitor Pereira’s Exit

Gary O’Neil In Talks For Shock Return To Wolves After Vitor Pereira’s Exit

In a dramatic twist, Gary O’Neil could be on his way back to Wolverhampton Wanderers — less than a year after being sacked by the same club.

According to multiple reports, including BBC Sport, the 42-year-old is in discussions with Wolves about a potential return to Molineux following the dismissal of head coach Vitor Pereira on Sunday morning.

Wolves Begin Search For A New Boss

The Midlands club has wasted no time in searching for a new manager after a torrid start to the 2024/25 Premier League season. Wolves are currently winless after 10 games, sitting in the relegation zone and desperate for a turnaround.

O’Neil, who managed Wolves last season before being dismissed in December 2024, is said to have held positive initial talks with the club’s hierarchy about a potential comeback.

Other Names In The Mix

While O’Neil is a strong candidate, he’s not the only name on the list. Middlesbrough boss Rob Edwards is also being considered, though his appointment would be more complicated due to his current contract and the significant compensation fee Boro would demand.

Wolves have also been known to favor coaches with links to super-agent Jorge Mendes, with previous appointments such as Nuno Espírito Santo, Bruno Lage, and Pereira himself all having ties to Mendes. Reports suggest the club is also speaking to at least one other manager from Mendes’ network.

O’Neil’s Rocky Exit And Possible Redemption

Gary O’Neil was dismissed by Wolves in December 2024 after a poor start to the season, despite being credited with bringing stability during his earlier months in charge. However, with Wolves now in a deeper crisis, a return could provide both parties a chance for redemption.

O’Neil is said to be keen on a return to management and open to rejoining Wolves to help them fight off relegation.

Whether the club will take the bold step of rehiring their former boss remains to be seen — but one thing is clear: Wolves are running out of time and options to turn their season around.
