Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali during Nigeria’s World Cup qualifier match
Eric Chelle Explains Why Stanley Nwabali Remains Nigeria’s No.1 Despite Maduka Okoye’s Return
Head coach of the Super Eagles, Eric Chelle, has revealed why Stanley Nwabali will continue as Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper despite the return of Maduka Okoye to action for Udinese.
Nwabali’s recent performances have come under scrutiny following an error against Lesotho in the World Cup qualifiers that gifted the visitors a goal. Though Nigeria bounced back with a convincing 4–0 win over Benin Republic, questions have lingered about his form and long-term place in the squad.
Speaking in an interview with a Super Eagles legend, Chelle dismissed any immediate plans to replace the Chippa United shot-stopper, emphasizing his trust in Nwabali’s mentality and leadership.
“Nobody knows what I ask of my players. Sometimes they make mistakes, which is normal. Maybe I told Nwabali to be strong. I don’t want a nice guy in my team,” Chelle said.
The coach went on to draw comparisons from his playing days, referencing a former teammate whose fiery personality inspired confidence in defence.
“I played with a Serbian goalkeeper who was crazy on the pitch. Because he was crazy, we the defenders were also crazy too,” he added. “I want a player with top character. I know that sometimes he needs to relax, but the reality is that Stanley gives everything on the pitch for the team and the country.”
Maduka Okoye’s return from suspension after a betting regulation breach had sparked speculation of a possible shift in goalkeeping hierarchy. However, Chelle’s remarks make it clear that Nwabali’s passion, aggression, and leadership are exactly what he wants as Nigeria continues its push toward World Cup qualification.
For now, Nwabali remains Nigeria’s No.1, with the full confidence of his manager — not just for his talent, but for his fighting spirit and character.
