Eric Chelle Opens Up On Super Eagles Progress, Leadership Group, And Nigeria’s Football Identity

Super Eagles head coach Eric Sekou Chelle has opened up on his vision, challenges, and philosophy since taking charge of Nigeria’s senior national football team. In a revealing chat with former Green Eagles legend Segun Odegbami, popularly known as Mathematical Odegbami, Chelle discussed his recruitment process, leadership structure, and plans to build a strong football identity for Nigeria.

Chelle, who described his appointment as “exciting,” said he was proud to lead one of the most talented national teams in the world.

“From the start, I knew this job would be difficult, but my crew and I were keen to take it. The Super Eagles are one of the best teams in the world,” Chelle said.

He praised the team’s gradual improvement, noting that the players are getting better with each game.

Discovery Of Benjamin Fredericks And New Talents

Chelle shared insights from the Unity Games held outside the FIFA window, revealing how Benjamin Fredericks earned his debut. With many foreign-based players unavailable, the NFF President suggested Fredericks, who impressed the coach with his intensity and work rate in training.

“He surprised me with his energy and attitude. That’s why I gave him a chance,” Chelle said.

He also mentioned that his staff are closely monitoring over 500 Nigerian players worldwide, following 80 players every week — a testament to his commitment to unearthing new talent.

Leadership Group And Team Dynamics

Addressing rumours surrounding the Super Eagles’ leadership structure, Chelle confirmed that William Troost-Ekong remains captain but highlighted a “leadership group” of trusted senior players.

“We have a 4–5 man leadership group — Ekong, Wilfred Ndidi, Moses Simon, and Victor Osimhen. These are the players I speak to first when it comes to decisions or issues,” Chelle explained.

He emphasized unity and communication within the squad, refusing to be drawn into speculation about who might take over the armband in the future.

Nwabali’s Character And The Need For Soldiers

On Stanley Nwabali, Chelle reiterated his belief in the goalkeeper despite recent criticism.

“I don’t want a nice guy in goal. I played with a crazy Serbian goalkeeper — that kind of energy pushes defenders to fight harder. Nwabali has that spirit,” he said.

He added that his team includes a psychologist, emphasizing his focus on building a side full of character, fighting spirit, and mental resilience.

“I want soldiers on the pitch — sharks and bulls. The road to the World Cup is tough and we must be tougher.”

Building Nigeria’s Football Identity

Chelle also touched on the structural challenges facing the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL), citing the lack of facilities compared to North African nations.

“We must build a football identity in Nigeria. It’s not just about me; it’s about all coaches in the domestic league working together.”

He called for collaboration among Nigerian coaches to develop a unified football philosophy that reflects the nation’s talent and culture.

Respect For NFF And Media

Chelle spoke warmly about his relationship with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), describing it as “mutual and professional.” He refused to comment on salary matters, insisting such discussions were private between him and his employers.

He also praised the Nigerian media, calling them “professional and passionate.”

“Nigeria is a nice place to live. It’s free, diverse, and full of energy. I don’t have social media or watch TV; I prefer watching matches and focusing on my work,” he said.

With determination, humility, and an eye for discipline, Eric Chelle is shaping a new era for the Super Eagles — one built on unity, structure, and character. His message is clear: Nigeria must rediscover its football identity and fight like champions again.

Bilic returns to the national team after more than a decade away, ending a two-year absence from management as he begins a second spell in charge of his country. ## Bilic begins a second spell with Croatia The Croatian Football Federation (HNS) announced Bilic’s appointment after the Executive Committee unanimously approved the recommendation of federation president Marijan Kustic. Bilic previously managed Croatia between 2006 and 2012, guiding the national team through two European Championships before embarking on a successful club coaching career that included spells with West Ham United, West Bromwich Albion, Besiktas and Al-Ittihad. The federation believes his experience and deep understanding of Croatian football make him the ideal candidate to lead the next generation. ## Huge task replacing Zlatko Dalic Bilic succeeds one of the most successful managers in Croatia’s history. Dalic stepped down after the 2026 World Cup, bringing an end to a remarkable tenure that included a World Cup final, a World Cup semi-final and several memorable tournament campaigns. Federation president Marijan Kustic acknowledged the size of the challenge but expressed complete confidence in Bilic. > “I would like to once again thank Zlatko for the exceptional results he achieved during his tenure. It is not easy to follow in his footsteps, but we are convinced Slaven is the right person for this role.” Kustic added that Bilic’s international pedigree and extensive coaching experience were decisive factors behind the appointment. ## Bilic honoured to return Bilic described his return as the greatest honour of his coaching career and admitted he understands the expectations that come with leading one of international football’s most consistent tournament teams. > “I would like to thank President Kustic and the Federation’s leadership for the confidence they have shown in allowing me to lead the Croatian national team once again — the greatest honour for any Croatian coach.” The 57-year-old also praised the standards established under Dalic while insisting he is ready for the responsibility. > “I am fully aware of the high expectations that follow such a remarkable period under Zlatko Dalic, but anyone who takes charge of Croatia must be prepared for that because we are a football nation that lives and breathes its national team.” ## A new chapter begins Bilic now faces the task of building on Dalic’s legacy while preparing Croatia for the next international cycle. With a blend of experienced stars and emerging young talent at his disposal, Croatia will hope their returning manager can guide them to another successful era on the international stage.
