Lando Norris Faces ‘Consequences’ After Collision With McLaren Teammate Oscar Piastri At Singapore Grand Prix

McLaren’s Lando Norris has admitted he will face “consequences” following his first-lap collision with teammate Oscar Piastri at the Singapore Grand Prix, which left both drivers frustrated despite finishing third and fourth respectively.

The incident occurred at Turn Three in Marina Bay, when Norris made contact with Max Verstappen’s Red Bull, damaging his front wing and sliding toward Piastri’s McLaren. While both drivers managed to recover and secure strong finishes, the tense moment raised questions about internal discipline and team harmony.

“The Team Held Me Accountable”

Norris, currently 22 points behind Piastri in the championship standings with six races remaining, said McLaren had held him responsible for the clash.

“The team held me accountable for what happened, which I think is fair,” said the 25-year-old Briton. “Then we made progress from there on understanding what the repercussions were for myself, to avoid anything happening worse than what did.”

Neither Norris nor McLaren revealed what those “consequences” were, but it’s clear the team is taking the matter seriously — consistent with McLaren’s long-standing rule: don’t crash with your teammate.

Piastri: “Not How We Want To Go Racing”

After the collision, Piastri was heard on team radio asking if McLaren were “cool with Lando barging me out of the way,” though no team orders or penalties were issued during the race.

Speaking later, the Australian said:

“It’s not how we want to go racing. Lando’s taken responsibility for that and so has the team.”

Norris echoed that sentiment, calling the incident “something smaller than a crash” but still unacceptable under McLaren’s racing framework.

“The simple answer is there was contact between the two cars. And that’s something we always want to avoid,” he explained. “It causes controversy, and that’s never good. What’s made us strong as a team is the trust we’ve built through accountability.”

Verstappen Jokes About McLaren ‘Favouritism’

Adding spice to the weekend buildup ahead of the United States Grand Prix, Max Verstappen jokingly claimed McLaren “absolutely” favors Norris when asked by reporters.

The Red Bull driver laughed and later clarified through his PR team that the comment was made in jest.

“I honestly don’t know. I don’t care either. They’re doing a great job being so quick. For me, it’s about maximizing our own performance,” Verstappen said.

Piastri, for his part, dismissed any notion of bias, insisting the team treats both drivers fairly:

“I’m very happy that there’s no favouritism or bias.”

Focus Shifts To The United States Grand Prix

With tensions cooled, both McLaren drivers will look to move past Singapore’s controversy at the United States Grand Prix in Austin (17–19 October), where racing resumes under scorching heat conditions that have already been flagged as a potential “heat hazard.”
