Jose Mourinho has faced many rivals in his storied career, but few have gone toe-to-toe with him as personally—and as explosively—as Okan Buruk. The Galatasaray manager has now fired a brutal parting shot at the “Special One,” claiming he hasn’t evolved as a coach and bluntly declaring: “I was better than him.”
The rivalry between Buruk and Mourinho burned brightly during the Portuguese manager’s single turbulent season in Turkey with Fenerbahce. Things boiled over in February 2025 after Mourinho’s infamous “jumping like monkeys” comment about the Galatasaray bench, which sparked accusations of racism, legal action, and a four-game suspension.
The tension reached boiling point in April during a fiery Turkish Cup clash. After Fenerbahce’s 2-1 defeat, Mourinho pinched Buruk’s nose in a bizarre confrontation, sparking a bench-clearing brawl and three red cards. Buruk later admitted he exaggerated his fall in the incident, while Fenerbahce accused him of theatrics “like he was shot.”
Despite Mourinho’s mind games, Buruk came out on top. His Galatasaray side went unbeaten against Mourinho’s Fenerbahce across three matches, with two wins and a draw, en route to their third consecutive Super Lig title.
“He doesn’t just play inside the pitch. He wants to play outside the pitch too,” Buruk told The Athletic. “He tried a lot of things, but in the end, we were better than him. I was better than him. We won the title against him.”
Buruk went further, questioning whether Mourinho has kept up with modern football. “He’s not focused like before. He doesn’t think about football like before,” Buruk said. “He has never changed his style as a coach. He is a really important character, he has really important charisma, but in terms of football, we have to upgrade ourselves every year. Maybe the problem for him is that he hasn’t upgraded himself as a coach.”
Now, Mourinho is looking to repair his reputation with Benfica after his short-lived Turkish adventure ended in disappointment. But with former rivals like Buruk publicly doubting his ability to adapt, the question remains—can the Special One reinvent himself in the modern game, or has his era truly passed?
At Sports Market International, ranked among the best sports blogs worldwide, we’ll continue to track Mourinho’s next chapter and how his legendary career evolves—or unravels—in Lisbon.
