Wayne Rooney Lifts The Lid On Bizarre Away Day Stories And Owners’ Obsession With xG
Wayne Rooney has seen it all in football – goals, glory, and even some very strange away trips. On the latest episode of The Wayne Rooney Show, the Manchester United and England legend shared some of the quirkiest, most uncomfortable experiences from his playing career.
Dressing Rooms Too Hot, Too Cold – And Even Flooded
Rooney revealed how visiting clubs sometimes made life awkward for away teams. Chelsea’s dressing room? “Too hot.” Anfield’s? “Freezing.” Tottenham’s? “Sweaty and cramped.”
But the most shocking came at Sunderland, where a leaking toilet left United players covered in… well, let’s just say it wasn’t water.
“I was suspended that day, but above the dressing rooms were toilets,” Rooney recalled. “The roof came through and all the players had it [toilet water] all over them and their clothes.”
Fireworks Over The Hotel
It wasn’t just the stadiums that caused chaos. Rooney also described being woken up on New Year’s Eve by fireworks directly above his team’s hotel in Birmingham.
“At midnight all the players were woken up by fireworks on the roof. No chance of a proper night’s sleep,” he laughed.
Painful Returns
Some trips were more emotional than funny. When Rooney returned to Goodison Park with Manchester United in 2005, the Everton faithful let him know how they felt about his £27m move. Even his dad refused to attend.
“It was horrible. My dad wouldn’t go because he knew I’d be getting a lot of stick,” Rooney admitted.
The xG Obsession Rooney Can’t Stand
Beyond the stories, Rooney also took aim at modern football’s obsession with expected goals (xG). He believes owners’ fixation on data has led to fewer long-range shots.
“Owners want high xG, so teams don’t shoot from the edge of the box anymore,” he said. “But players like Frank Lampard made careers from those shots. His xG would’ve been low, but he scored over 200 goals.”
Stats back him up: this season averages 7.3 shots outside the box per game, compared to 10.5 in 2016/17.
Sympathy For Ekitike
Rooney also commented on Hugo Ekitike’s bizarre red card for Liverpool, after the striker removed his shirt in celebration of a late Carabao Cup winner.
“I’m sure he’ll regret it, but honestly, I find it refreshing to see someone celebrating with passion,” Rooney said, adding that Ekitike will be “devastated” to miss Liverpool’s next league clash.
