Lyon Plot Ambitious Move To Bring Bournemouth’s Eli Junior Kroupi Back To Ligue 1

The January transfer window might be a few months away, but Olympique Lyonnais are already cooking. Reports out of France suggest Lyon are plotting a bold move to bring Eli Junior Kroupi back to Ligue 1, just months after the 19-year-old striker sealed a summer switch to Premier League side Bournemouth.

Lyon’s Striker Problem

Let’s be real — Les Gones are not firing on all cylinders in front of goal. With only seven goals in five Ligue 1 games, Lyon rank just ninth in the league’s attacking charts. The recent narrow 1-0 win against Angers? Proof of the problem: dominance in possession, but a serious struggle to actually put the ball in the net.

The late departure of Georges Mikautadze to Villarreal hasn’t helped, and while Martin Satriano works hard, he isn’t seen as a consistent goal machine. Lyon fans dreaming of a European return know that without a proper finisher, those ambitions could slip fast.

Enter Eli Junior Kroupi

According to Jeunes Footeux, manager Paulo Fonseca has already floated the idea of signing Kroupi. And why not? The teenager was one of France’s brightest young stars last season, bagging 22 goals in 30 games for Lorient in Ligue 2. He didn’t just score goals — he was voted 2024-25 Ligue 2 Player of the Season for his maturity and consistency.

But his Premier League adventure has been rocky so far. Signed by Bournemouth for €13m (£11m/$15m), Kroupi has only managed 12 minutes of action across three league appearances. That lack of playing time could tempt him to look elsewhere — and Lyon want to pounce.

Transfer Twist: Loan Or Battle?

A loan deal seems the most realistic option for Lyon in January. It would allow Kroupi to rediscover his rhythm without forcing Bournemouth into a permanent decision just yet. But here’s the catch — Lyon aren’t the only French club circling. Other Ligue 1 outfits are already sniffing around, knowing his stock remains sky-high among scouts and fans.

Kroupi’s Next Chance: Leeds United Test

For now, Kroupi’s focus stays on England. Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola could hand him more minutes in the upcoming Carabao Cup clash against Leeds United. If Kroupi shines there, it could be a career lifeline — or further fuel for Lyon’s transfer fire.

Sports Market International Take: Lyon’s pursuit of Kroupi is a classic example of how the football transfer market has become a global chessboard. Young talents don’t get time to settle anymore — if they’re not playing, clubs are lining up. That’s the modern sports market reality, and it’s why Lyon’s move makes so much sense.
