“I Just Felt So Emotional” – Vancouver Whitecaps’ Sebastian Berhalter Reflects On USMNT Debut
Vancouver Whitecaps midfielder Sebastian Berhalter has opened up about the emotions surrounding his first senior appearance for the U.S. Men’s National Team, describing it as a moment he’ll never forget.
The 23-year-old made his debut in June against Turkey at the Pratt & Whitney Stadium in Hartford, Connecticut — a milestone that stirred powerful memories of his own soccer journey.
“It Was Goosebumps”
Speaking on The Give N Go podcast, Berhalter admitted that the moment overwhelmed him with emotion as he recalled being the kid chasing team buses years ago.
“I think it’s something I can’t even describe. Like it was goosebumps… I was on the bus, seeing everyone tailgating, kids running alongside, and I just felt so emotional. I was that kid once. I had tears running down my face. I was like, ‘wow.’”
Fighting For More Caps
While proud of his debut, Berhalter made it clear that he wants more opportunities with the national team.
“I felt so fortunate and so proud that I got to represent my country. Just being there was incredible. But it only made me want more — to help my country and make the people proud.”
Strong Season With Vancouver
At club level, Berhalter has been instrumental for the Whitecaps, contributing eight assists and two goals this season. Vancouver currently sit second in the Western Conference, two points behind leaders San Diego FC, but with two games in hand.
The midfielder credits the team’s chemistry for their success.
“It’s a good group. Guys have been together three or four years, so we know each other well. When people go down, the next guy always steps up. It’s a fun locker room, a fun group to be part of — and we want to win a trophy.”
Looking Ahead
With his first USMNT appearance under his belt and a strong MLS campaign ongoing, Berhalter’s focus is clear: keep improving, keep contributing, and fight his way back into the national setup.
