Valerien Ismael Demands Fairness After Blackburn–Ipswich Abandonment

Blackburn Rovers manager Valerien Ismael believes his side should be awarded all three points from the abandoned Championship clash against Ipswich Town, calling it the “fairest thing to do.”

Rovers were leading 1-0 through Todd Cantwell’s second-half penalty, while Ipswich were reduced to 10 men after Jacob Greaves’ red card, when heavy rain forced referee Steve Martin to halt the game with just 10 minutes remaining.

Ismael: “We Deserve The Points”

Speaking after the abandonment, Ismael argued the advantage was firmly with his side at the time of the stoppage.

“We’ve got the right to want the three points because it’s the fair thing to do, especially when the opponent is down to 10. Eleven versus 11 is another situation. We were clearly at an advantage and the data shows that we were on the front foot since the red card.”

The Rules Around Abandoned Matches

EFL regulations state that if a match is abandoned, the league board has the final say on whether:

  • The result at the time of abandonment is allowed to stand,

  • The fixture is replayed in full,

  • Or it is partially replayed.

With Blackburn in control before the weather interruption, Ismael insists the current “grey area” in the rules could undermine the sport’s integrity.

“It’s a generic problem. It’s a deep problem. It’s a grey area and it puts the integrity of football in danger because everyone can speculate on anything or try to stop any game. This case will set a precedent.”

What Happens Next?

Both clubs have until Wednesday 16:00 BST to submit their final statements to the EFL. The board is expected to announce a decision by the end of the week.

Regardless of the outcome, the situation has raised wider questions about how abandoned games are handled — and whether fairness should mean Blackburn’s slim but significant advantage is rewarded.
