Ujah Announces Retirement From Professional Football
Former Nigerian international Anthony Ujah has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 34. The striker made the decision public via an Instagram post earlier today, expressing gratitude for his journey and the support of his family, coaches, and teammates.
Ujah’s career began in Nigeria with Abuja FC and Warri Wolves before he moved to Europe in 2010. He had notable stints in Norway with Lillestrøm SK, in Germany with Mainz 05, 1. FC Köln, Werder Bremen, Union Berlin, and Eintracht Braunschweig, and in China with Liaoning Whowin. His final club was Botev Plovdiv in Bulgaria, where he joined in June 2024. Unfortunately, his time there was marred by a serious knee injury that limited his appearances.
Over his 15-year career, Ujah scored 113 goals in over 350 appearances. He is particularly remembered for his role in helping 1. FC Köln secure promotion to the Bundesliga in 2014. Internationally, Ujah earned seven caps for the Super Eagles between 2013 and 2015.
In his retirement announcement, Ujah reflected on his journey, stating:
“Today, I make the toughest decision of my life, retiring from professional football. Football has been more than a game for me; it has been my passion, my identity, my home.”
Fans and former teammates have expressed their admiration and best wishes for Ujah as he transitions to the next chapter of his life.
