Kun Khalifat FC of Owerri has raised the alarm over severe financial constraints that could force the newly promoted side out of the 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).
In a statement signed by the club’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Michael Chukwudi Amaefule, the Imo State-based outfit appealed for urgent financial and sponsorship support to sustain its topflight campaign.
Amaefule disclosed that competing in the NPFL for a full season requires an estimated budget of nearly ₦1 billion, a figure far beyond the club’s current financial capacity.
“We are not asking for help out of fear or lack of determination. Rather, this is a duty to our fans and Imolites at large,” the CEO stated.
“Competing in the Premier League requires substantial resources, and we cannot sustain it without external assistance.”
The CEO stressed that if Kun Khalifat fails to honour fixtures during the campaign, it would not be due to a lack of commitment but to financial realities beyond the club’s control.
The Owerri side has enjoyed a rapid rise through the ranks, climbing from the Nigeria Nationwide League (NLO) to the Nigeria National League (NNL) before sealing promotion to the NPFL.
However, the management admitted that topflight football presents new financial and logistical challenges that demand collective support.
The club is calling on its fans, the Imo State Government, corporate organizations, and well-meaning individuals to provide sponsorships and backing to secure its NPFL future.
Amaefule reiterated that with adequate support, Kun Khalifat can not only survive in the NPFL but also grow into a force capable of representing Imo State with pride on the national stage.
Kun Khalifat began its debut NPFL season with a commendable goalless draw against 2024 champions Rangers International in Enugu.
The club will now face reigning champions Remo Stars next Monday in Owerri, as they continue their bid to retain their topflight status.
