Acuna Makes NPFL History: First Defender In No. 1 Jersey
Nasarawa United bolstered its squad with the unveiling of eight new players ahead of the second half of the 2024/2025 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season. The announcement reflects the club’s determination to strengthen its roster and improve its league standing.
The new signings include Benson Abbey, Peace Dewan, and Abubakar Aliyu, among others. Acuna earns the No. 1 jersey, dropped by all goalkeepers signed over a possible curse. His belief settled all doubts and fears as he consistently injected fresh energy and tactical versatility into their lineup as the solid miners moved out from the impossibility to prepare for the future challenges in the top flight.
Former 3SC of Ibadan Captain, RC Bobo Dioulasso of Burkina Faso, Akwa United & Kwara United was known for his calmness, energetic and visionary quality in the backline, as his wealth of experience was greatly needed to push the Solid Miners away from the relegation zone.
The Club chairman, Solomon Babanjah, appreciates the team’s solid defence after a 3-2 victory against Enyimba on Matchday-37 to earn a 9th position on the league table with the same points (52) as the defending champion, Rangers Int’l, ahead of the final matchday away trip to Port Harcourt to face Rivers United.
Benson Acuna capped Shooting Stars ‘ promotion to the NPFL back in 2021 after an impressive 100% performance, getting a possible 18 points in 6games under Coach Edith Agoye.
His brilliant performance earned him a cap during the re-opening of Lekan Salami Stadium as the Oluyole Warriors spanked the visiting NK Tabor Sezana 4-0 in an exciting encounter. “Abbey Benson Acuna” is surely a legend in the making.
Nassarawa United has resumed ahead of the 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League season and will be travelling to Minna to face Niger Tornadoes in a bid to secure maximum points or at least one point on the road.
