Orange Extends WAFCON Sponsorship, Boosts Women’s Football
French telecoms giant Orange has added the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations that kicked off at the weekend to Confederation of African Football (CAF) sponsorship roster.
The Women’s Africa Cup of Nations is being played in five cities across Morocco. Among the 12 participating countries are six that have Orange network coverage – Morocco, Mali, Senegal, Tunisia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Botswana.
As part of its sponsorship activation Orange Morocco launched its ‘Broadcast Cafés’ initiative, equipping cafés across the country with technology to broadcast the WAFCON and encourage social engagement around the tournament.
Yasser Shaker, CEO of Orange Middle East and Africa, said: “Being a partner of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations is much more than a sports commitment: in its role as a responsible operator in Africa, it is a way to support countries in positive societal dynamics. Sport, and in particular women’s football, is a powerful lever for national pride, inclusion and freedom.”
Since 2018, Orange has committed to splitting its sponsorship spend 50/50 between men’s and women’s football. In the women’s game this meant support national teams, as well as local initiatives such as training young girls in clubs, and working with high-profile ambassadors, and creating content that celebrates women’s careers in sport.
An Orange research study found 80% of Moroccans have watched women’s football on television, but 31% face difficulties finding ways to watch the matches.
More than 83 million people watched the last edition of WAFCON. The championship kicked of July 5 and finishes July 27. South Africa are the current title holders.
