Edo Olympic Day Run Set To Go With Top Officials
The 2025 edition of the International Olympic Day Run is set to hold in Edo State this Saturday, June 28, with top government officials, including the Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Dennis Idahosa, leading the event.
The run, which commemorates the founding of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1894, will bring together athletes, coaches, sports administrators, and members of the public in a symbolic demonstration of unity, fitness, and community spirit.
Although globally marked on June 23, Nigeria will observe the celebration on June 28, allowing more widespread participation across states.
Speaking ahead of the event, the Executive Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Hon. Amadin Desmond Enabulele, confirmed the state’s full readiness to host the Olympic Day Run. In a statement issued by his Media Officer, Edoko Wilson Edoko, Enabulele emphasized the significance of the celebration beyond athletics.
“This global event celebrates more than just sports. It promotes healthy living, fitness, unity, and community wellness. Let us all come together to run for health, run for peace, and run for unity,” he said.
The run will commence at 7:00 AM from the iconic Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium and follow a mapped route through Ekenwan Road, Plymouth Road, and Akenzua Road, before concluding at the stadium. Participants will receive certificates of participation at the end of the event.
Enabulele also made a passionate call to young people across the state to take advantage of the event as a way to stay active and healthy.
“Let me use this opportunity to call on our youths to come out and participate in the Olympic Day Run. We all need to stay active through sports — it’s essential for our physical health and well-being,” he urged.
The Edo State edition is expected to draw hundreds of participants, reaffirming the state’s position as a hub for grassroots and elite sports development in Nigeria.
