SSA Adeboye Hails Troost-Ekong Foundation’s Grassroots Impact

The Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan came alive over the weekend as the Troost-Ekong Foundation hosted its high-profile “Play for Purpose” charity football match, drawing prominent dignitaries, athletes, and entertainers in support of grassroots sports and community development.

The event, led by Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong, was attended by key government officials, including the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Grassroots Sports Development, Hon. Adeboye Anthony Adeyinka, who praised the foundation’s efforts in leveraging football to drive positive social change.

“I commend William Troost-Ekong and the Troost-Ekong Foundation for their tireless efforts in promoting grassroots sports development and social change,” said Adeboye. “With this kind of support, I see a future where initiatives like this help shape the next generation of champions and responsible citizens.”

The match featured a thrilling face-off between Team White and Team Green, with top football stars such as Obafemi Martins, Odion Ighalo, Ahmed Musa, and Victor Boniface, as well as African football icon Alex Song. Team Green won in regulation, but Team White secured victory in a penalty shootout. Celebrities like Zlatan, Broda Shaggi, AY, and Odumodublvck added excitement to the event.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu also participated in the event, showcasing his football skills and reaffirming his government’s commitment to youth and sports development. NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau (MON), NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko, and other top sports administrators were also in attendance, lending weight to the growing importance of sports philanthropy in Nigeria.

The “Play for Purpose” initiative is part of the Troost-Ekong Foundation’s broader mission to empower underprivileged youth through sports, education, and community outreach. The foundation has become a key player in Nigeria’s grassroots sports movement, aligning with the national Renewed Hope Agenda.

Adeboye emphasized the importance of such initiatives in building a better future through sports, noting, “Let’s continue to support programs that harness the power of sports to transform lives and inspire positive change.”

The successful charity match further cements William Troost-Ekong’s status as not only a national football hero but also a passionate advocate for youth empowerment and social responsibility.
