Showtime Bowl XII: Tribute To Fallen Kano Athletes
The atmosphere at Showtime Arena was heavy with grief on Sunday evening as players, officials, and fans observed a poignant one-minute silence in memory of the 22 Kano State athletes who tragically lost their lives in a devastating road accident while returning from the National Sports Festival in Ogun State.
The tribute preceded the kickoff of the highly anticipated Showtime Bowl XII final between the Lagos Athletic Knights and the Warriors Flag Football Club. The arena, usually vibrant with cheers and excitement, fell into a solemn hush as attendees stood united in honoring the departed souls.
“Tonight, we pause to remember our fellow athletes who dedicated their lives to the spirit of competition and unity,” said Azeez Amida, Chairman of the Showtime Flag Football League. “Their passion and commitment to sportsmanship will forever inspire us.”
The tragic accident occurred on Saturday when the bus carrying the Kano State contingent veered off the Chiromawa Bridge on the Kano-Zaria expressway, resulting in the loss of 22 lives and leaving several others injured. The athletes were returning home after participating in the National Sports Festival, a biennial event that celebrates athletic excellence across Nigeria.
In response to the tragedy, Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf declared Monday a day of mourning and announced support measures for the bereaved families.
The Showtime Bowl XII continued with a renewed sense of purpose, serving as a testament to the resilience and unity of the Nigerian sports community in the face of sorrow.
